Chip Kelly resigns as UCLA HC to become OSU’s OC

I do not see how it makes sense. Has his star gone down that much?
He has to pay a $1.5M buyout. Chip must have FU money to make this perplexing move.

Chip Kelly hates being a modern day CFB HC.

Much of the job is recruiting/re-recruiting players 24/7 due to the portal as well as talking to donors for NIL.

Kelly just wants to be an X's and O's Saturday coach.

UCLA was pulling in smaller classes and relying more heavily on transfers as a result of Kelly's disinterest in recruiting.

So yeah, he has the money to be able to say "yeah I'll take $3 million less and pay a buyout to get to be a OC somewhere".

Plus, he was on a warm seat, would be fired this season with a sub 0.500 campaign.

Eventually, Kelly will probably be an NFL OC...

this is pretty much a perfect analysis from my perspective as a fellow armchair warrior.

kelly has the UNH connection with day, a good payday and a fairly decent shot at a national title, which has notably eluded kelly. a fairly smart move by all accounts.

it's been interesting to see OSU make all these moves. that spanking from michigan must have really, really, really, really stung.

This kind of reminds me of the late 90s when Michigan won the NC in 1997 and that stung OSU who went out and hired Tressel and then went on a 20 year run until the recent Michigan success. I think the B1G comes down to OSU and Oregon this year with Michigan falling back behind a few teams

UCLA is in a world of financial hurt as they prepare to join the Big Ten. They ran a deficit of over $32 million for the 22-33 athletic year (following a $20+ million shortfall the year before. There has been no determination of a subsidy that will be imposed on UCLA (to benefit Cal)) that had been estimated to be between $2-10 mil annually.

There is no money for facilities and the Bruins will be skittish about supporting NIL or collectives that come at the expense of supporting athletics directly,

Now you have a 30 day portal window opening in Westwood. UCLA is going to be in a world of hurt going forward.

Kelly has been looking for a life raft since December. A name that has surfaced in PJ Fleck, who (similarly) has seen the writing on the wall at Minnesota. No hope of winning and that program has basically been rendered a development program that will be raided via the portal annually, gopher fans have simply not indicated a willingness to play the NIL game. Fleck, IMO, would be trading one sinking ship for another.

Spanking? They lost to the eventual national champion by 6 on the road,

Ohio State is going to be interesting to follow if only because of the enormous pressure on this squad. Haven't beaten Michigan since 2019 so that game is an absolute must win and then all the offseason news means they're all in on winning it all this year.

At least 12 team playoff scenario means it's hard to see them missing the CFP even if they slip up.

Well, Gopher fans scared up enough $ to keep Darius Taylor after Fleck said he was going to transfer. And I think a few others too. But no, probably not the 7 figure NIL game.

Totally hear a lot of what you're saying. Locally in Los Angeles, the talk has been not that Kelly was disinterested in recruiting so much as he was frustrated by the challenges of UCLA's shocking almost total absence in the NIL space. That's a huge part of the re-recruiting players due to the portal problem that you noted.

Kelly is a development coach who wants players who become immersed in his system so that it is second nature and not something they have to think about. When Dante Moore transferred out, you could see the writing on the wall for Kelly. It's really hard work for a coach like Kelly to compete in L.A. at a basketball-first school in the current post-NIL environment with USC and all of their NIL money across town.

Now is way deeper than late 90s situation for Ohio State. Losing to Michigan 3 years in a row plus seeing Michigan win 3 big ten titles plus a national championship in the backdrop of that unresolved sign stealing scandal has left resentment in Buckeye universe that Michigan achievements were illegitimate and need to be met with complete retribution. Foray into Buckeyeland and you will see replays of CJ Stroud receiving play calls against Michigan and then Conor Stallions motioning for the Wolverines to quickly make adjustments. It's like a nightmare replying in their head that's fueling their fire.

Yeah, there's been a lot of rumors about Kelly and recruiting out there: he wasn't contacting recruits that had stated interest in UCLA, basically was mailing it in on wining and dining recruits, and then the NIL problem has been noted everywhere.

UCLA recruited itself pre-NIL; but now? Touted recruits are going where the $ is in a way that wasn't true before.

Before, just being within 300 miles of a hotbed of recruiting meant that a school was set; now it's completely different for high end recruits.

They'll still go to the local football factory that they dreamed of playing for, but only if the money is still at least similar to outside offers. And if somebody comes in way over the top (see Oregon mining CA for tons of top-flight talent the past few years), those recruits are bolting the local football schools that used to win them 9 times out of 10.

And as you note, USC is going to offer much better NIL to any local recruit worthy of note, so they're already behind on those cross-town battles. Toss in Oregon and all the other football powers that are offering $ and it's tough.

Expectations at UCLA are probably too high unless they change things on NIL significantly. They're not going to be a top half Big Ten team with that limitation.

They probably will change their NIL stance now with Kelly gone. UCLA will be a top half B1G team with or without a change in the NIL stance. The old Western Division is rather weak overall. If any teams in the old B1G get pushed out once the mega conference is established, they will be from the West.

Does anyone care about UCLA football? My sports-reference research says they haven’t been consistently relevant since the mid-80s.

Looks like they’ve finished in the top 25 four times in the last 28 years. (The 10-2 Sun Bowl v. NU team finished 16th.)

OSU seems perfect for Chip Kelly.

I think the thing with UCLA is that it is not so much what they have done, but more what people think they have the capacity to do. UCLA is the type of program that shows up on lists of college football sleeping giants. People look at the school with high academics, large alumni base, market, location in strong recruiting area, etc. and think they could or should be doing better. Sorta like Texas A&M or North Carolina.

Problem is the total disinterest in football of the student body, alumni and Californians in general.

That’s a great point.

I still consider Rutgers as a similar program with much more potential, but who has punched below their weight class.

Don't know about getting antsy, but with their recruiting and especially those mind-boggling transfer additions, they'll be the heavy favorite in the B1G along with maybe Oregon.

OSU has been the most consistent program in CF since the mid 1960s.......they've had 2 losing seasons in around 60 years which is just mind-boggling. Think about it - they've been 11-2 the last 3 years and their fans and supporters consider those years as complete and total failures and are disgusted. I don't think that Michigan NC did the rest of the conference any favors
