    Portal update

I watched Shutt play half a dozen times on the UAA circuit his senior year (he was on the same team as Braden Huff), and maybe I'm an idiot, but I was so impressed with his game. I think he'd fit in really well at NU, and maybe the struggles he had at Duke along with the knee surgery will bring...

Reported Portal Visit: Fairfield PG Jalen Leach

With Nicholson, Berry, Barnheizer (likely) and Martinelli coming back, it makes sense to bring in age and experience at PG to get this team to a third straight NCAA while giving Clayton and Windham a chance to develop.

Temporary stands at the practice field?

This has been a mess, but I couldn't care less about Soldier Field. Given the home schedule for this year, the stadium will either look like a tier 5 bowl game or effectively be away games (Wisconsin, Ohio State). All the other possibilities are problematic--Seatgeek might as well be on Mars...

CONFIRMED: Lakefront Temporary Stadium is a GO

If they pull it off I love it and I bet the players and students will, too. Whether to try to mitigate the wicked wind will be a strategic decision.

    Final game observations

On the final possession Painter told Hurley it's fine if he wanted to run a play to let the end of the bench try to score. What a mensch

    Doug Collins

On my personal Mount Rushmore. I grew up in Normal when he was playing and the years after, when he ran a summer camp—actually there every day, all day to teach kids, not show up once and give a speech—and hung out at Illinois State to play pickup games. The Summer Olympics fiasco has been...

    Was it a foul?

Not sure what your point is—that was a hedge, not a switch. Have you only looked at the floor view? Because from the original camera angle, it shows a lot more and is clearly an egregious illegal screen.

    Was it a foul?

The standard was met. This wasn’t a lean from a set position away from the play. She shifted her entire body, was still moving when she impeded the defender, and clearly gained an advantage as an integral part of the play.

    Was it a foul?

I think it’s only controversial to those whose frame of reference was the ESPN replay, which was at floor level and importantly was from the waist up. The live angle showed not just a minor violation but an obvious call that had to be made.

    New postseason tournament

Teams are going to need the younger guys because everyone else will transfer by then.

    It's a two-year commitment. Pay the man.

Life in the portal is tough for redshirt freshmen because they have no tape (the staff will make a practice tape because it's better than nothing) are in the back of the line, but with his previous offers and covid years coming off the board, something good should happen.

Do you pull for the B10 @ the final 4

I always root for conference teams in the tournament and will root for Purdue. What's there not to like about Painter?

    Anybody well-versed in redshirt/transfer rules?

PJ Haggerty is transferring from Tulsa a year after he transferred from TCU. Going to be a good scorer. But anyway, somebody on the socials said that because he redshirted his freshman year then transferred to Tulsa, the first year transfer didn't count. He also played in half a dozen countable...

Our guy is in the portal: Malik Mack, Harvard

If Trey Townsend at Oakland does hit the portal as a grad transfer, which is likely, I'd love to see him at NU. He'd provide a lot of additional flexibility to the lineup, and he's an absolutely outstanding young man.

Our guy is in the portal: Malik Mack, Harvard

Blackwell can play, but Essegian suffered a back injury and never got into the flow of the season. Basketball can be tough that way. If he has healed up, I'd take him in a second. As for Mack, I'm guessing his priorities shifted and he's looking for the bright lights and a big bag. I like...

    Refs

UConn would have won no matter how the refs called the game, but they were awful. There needs to be some consistency from game to game. It's frustrating to see soft inadvertent Flagrant 1s called in one game and no-calls on two-handed shoves in the back the next.

Like most of America I thought Oakland was in California. Wrong.

My wife works there, and my daughter is an alum—as are David Hasselhoff, amazing singer/songwriter Joe Henry, and Booger from Revenge of the Nerds. A lot of money has poured into the school over the past couple of decades for expansion. The basketball program is finally getting a little love...

    Kentucky bites the dust!!!!!!!!

OU is down the road from us, my wife works there, my son is friends with some of the starters, and we couldn't more excited for these guys. The senior leadership on this team is tremendous. Gohlke's performance was the result of a coach who told him all year he'd pull him if he didn't take every...

The Big Ten's All Transfer Team

The coach who just beat Kentucky has said he doesn’t recruit high-schoolers anymore. Portal and juco only.
