So Now that Hoops Over... What the Heck is Happening with 2024 Place to Play

I assume you watched this from a distance. I was a STH for the A’s up to 2 years ago, when I got a message from my sales rep that they were upping my ticket package price 80% the same week they let Marcus Semien, a local kid who I saw play in high school and college, go. That was 15 years...

So Now that Hoops Over... What the Heck is Happening with 2024 Place to Play

As a (I guess now former) hardcore Oakland A’s fan, don’t get me started. MLB and Fisher, in the way they approached this, were oblivious to the long term damage they are inflicting on their product for short term games. I am old, and I imagine my grandkids won’t be going to games 20 years...

March Madness Game Thread: Northwestern vs. UConn

UConn taking away the 3, daring the Cats to attack the rim. Cats have had good looks go unconverted.

A curmudgeon’s impossible wish for restructuring the tournament

Lol. Depleted with a typo! On the plus side, the Cats have a win against all four of the round of 32 teams they have played so far this year, and have won their last two matches with a number one team

A curmudgeon’s impossible wish for restructuring the tournament

Since the thought of playing a 1 or 2 seed in the second round again depresses me, I would love to see the tournament structured as 8 geographic 8 team unseeded regionals with an 8 team seeded final round. I understand the idea of protecting the top seeds (Purdue and UConn get a first round...

    Key stat of the game

Johnell Davis: 9 turnovers Since the pregame story line was Buie/Davis, containing Davis and exploiting FAU’s reliance on him was decisive. The comparative stat line: Davis: 18 points, 2 assists, 9 turnovers, 6 rebounds, 6-16 FG’s (1-6 3 pt.) Buie: 22 points, 4 assists, 3 turnovers, 3...

    Big Ten O/U

It was a real shame the call was made, but that is a really hard play for a ref to get to position. Almost every time on a play like that there is contact and a foul; the offensive player had a strong advantage, and as a trailing ref, if you don’t have clear vision you blow the whistle. Imagine...

    BTT, Tournament

The double bye team with the toughest first game draw is probably Illinois. I would not want to play OSU right now. Nebraska probably is luckiest, though away from Lincoln, ether PSU or Indiana will have a chance. I do like the Cats over Wisconsin.

    Martinelli at the 5?

With Martinelli, it would be the toothpick and roll.

Spread on Illini at Wisconsin game compared to Cats/Iowa

Well the Illini game was was pretty easy to call. Hope the Cats hold.

Spread on Illini at Wisconsin game compared to Cats/Iowa

Badgers are 3.5 favorites over Illini v. Cat at 2.5 over Iowa. I know the people who set lines know what they are doing, but it is hard for me to see the Badgers as the better bet based on how the Cats and Badgers have performed lately, and Illinois’ raw talent will be really hard for Wisconsin...

    Don't sleep on Iowa

While I hope the Cats don’t sleep on Iowa, it is pretty easy to fall asleep in Iowa. It is a pretty boring state.

A small advantage of being Northwestern

Watching the Maryland and Indiana road games the last few weeks, it seemed to me that the crowds (and to a great extent the home teams) were not particularly inspired. Both venues are historically difficult for visiting teams, but they were not terribly daunting in those games. I have to...

    Is CCC a good coach?

I think he shifted to a Wisconsin model when he hired Lowery and Audige and Buie both benefited from the change.

    Is CCC a good coach?

My short take on the longer posts above: for the first 7 to 8 years CCC worked under the Duke model. That produced one tournament team After the collapse of the pot-tournament team, he shifted to the Wisconsin model. I was unhappy when he used the Duke model, because I thought it was not...

    If you’d told me…

Their % was 8.333, less than half of that 10-53 pace. That was epically bad shooting, even for a bad shooting team.

    Seriously? Wisconsin at Lambeau?

If anyone ever read The Great American Novel by Philip Roth, it may lead you to think Dr. Gragg is a direct descendant of the owners of the Port Rupert Mundys. Oh, well, call me Smitty.

    If you’d told me…

The Terps were 2-22 from 3, and a lot of those were open looks. That game was like a class in Greek Mythology: One basketball god punishes the Cats by inflicting an ankle injury, and another, angry at the first, put a lid on Maryland’s basket.
