Hey all,
I am looking into the premise of adding Northwestern to the series of “100 things every fan should know...” books and wanted to make sure I get a good foundation from the knowledgeable fan base like yourself.

Give me 10 things that you think are VITAL to being an NU football fan. They can be a variety of great plays, great games, traditions, stories, etc- anything you think is an interesting link to NU football (or the school itself).

Here is what I have so far...

I apologize if I’m incorrect, but weren’t we the fighting Methodists?

I’m Jewish and certainly not very knowledgeable about different branches of Christianity, but I believe NU was originally a Methodist institution.

How about the honor of awarding the #1 jersey each year?

Also, the great success (and contributors) from our walk-on program.

Didn't see Ara Parsegian and his great teams of the early 1960's. That period between the late '50's and mid 60's was a hotbed of good football at NU and only about 10 years after our rose bowl victory. A number of NU players in the Playboy All-American issues of that time, and the Sports Illustrated cover in the fall of either '62 or '63.

Here's 10 (sorry if any are duplicates of yours):

"Purple Pride" guy from 1996 (now on "Modern Family")
Sandy Schwab
Lenny and the Jets
Upset of Miami (67?) preseason #1
Air Willie
Chico Kurzowski's quick kick
"High Hopes"
Robert Strotz - the man who tried to kill NU football but failed
Monsoon game against Michigan
0-0 tie with Illinois

Bonus:
MOON game
3 consecutive OT wins

I apologize if I’m incorrect, but weren’t we the fighting Methodists?

I’m Jewish and certainly not very knowledgeable about different branches of Christianity, but I believe NU was originally a Methodist institution.

Actually Otto was pulled off the band with regards to his football "discovery". He was a scholarship basketball player.

Great list. Seems like it already hit 100?

Well here are two more:

The two sequential “Instant Classics” with Victory Right taking down Minny one week and the Michigan Miracle the next.

Kyle’s one-handed grab with the other in a cast as “The Catch” that set the stage for “The Catch” of Northwestern Basketball lore that propelled NU into the NCAA Tourney.

Of course Smithee, you know the most ghastly stat of that year. 162 yards led the team in rushing. For the year. By future transfer and NFL replacement player Jim BrownE.
