2022 NCAA Regional in Chicago

Correct. If NU is in the tournament in 2022, they cannot be placed in this region.

I'm confused... is NU doing the hosting or Chicago? If it is Chicago, why can't NU be in the region? If it is NU, why is the game not at W-R? Seems to me there were teams in this year's tourney playing very close to home. Is there a distance requirement? Help!

A local college team is always the "host" when the games are played in the city's big basketball or football arena. I believe both Rice and University of Houston were hosts when the Final Four was played here.

Does "regional" mean the Sweet 16 and Final 8 games? I think so, but want to confirm.

As NU Houston said, every NCAA tournament site is "hosted" by a local conference or team(s), even if those games are not actually played in that school's stadium. By rule, a team cannot play NCAA tournament games either in its home stadium or at its host site, excepting Dayton at the First Four and the host of the Final Four. But there is no distance requirement.

Yes.

Ah, your jealousy is exploding.

I assure you, I will be very gracious when we play in front of all orange fans at our home away from home and you guys were kind enough to "host" so that we could actually play! :p

Haha, just kidding.

Hey ChitownUofI, what's the feeling within your fan base of Underwood's assistant coach hiring decisions? Walker made sense, of course. The other two, however, do you guys feel a little dirty about this, or is there an attitude of "do whatever it takes to win"? Sincere question out of curiosity.

^ I assume you're talking about one assistant, specifically! I'd say it breaks down like this:

25% know Illinois has a lot of potential and want to capitalize on it at all costs. They're the folks who think, "if what some of the Blue Bloods do is 'cheating,' then that's what you have to do." They see the hire as Illinois saying it's playing big boy ball in recruiting, or at least trying to. They'd argue we've been bringing a knife to a gun fight for years.

25% are very concerned. This crowd would have been the "holier than thou" folks, especially during the Weber era, when we were literally whining about things that weren't against the rules when we lost out on recruits.

50%, including me, are obviously concerned about the scandals at USF but don't particularly think that has much to do with being an assistant under Brad Underwood, and we're excited about his recruiting ability.

Thanks for the reply. Makes sense. I was also thinking about the Mac Irvin Fire guy. There was one quote from the Fire's current head coach referring to him knowing all the "backroads" to get to anyone in Chicago. We all know Chicago recruiting is a bit sketchy, but this is still probably a smart hire as per the first group you mentioned. Playing by the same rules as the big boys.

As long as programs like UNC are not getting heavily slammed by the NCAA for their actions, why should any other school try to play by the rules? Break rules, get two championship games in a row. Follow rules, go nearly a century without an NCAA tourney invite. Sad. I hope NU finds success doing it "right", but it's going to be tough as basketball is so much about the talent on the floor. I wonder how many teams have won a championship in the last 25 years without a single five star guy?

the hosting thing would kind of suck if We were a #1 seed and had to be shipped out of our region elsewhere that year!!!

There are 6,800 reasons the game won't be at WRA.....
Stop the whining about the seats. That's the right number. If it costs you money to get tickets, go make more money then - and please stop whining about it!

You missed the sarcasm......

If you followed my previous posts you'd have seen that I'm a big supporter of a slightly smaller WRA. Felis and willy are on the other side......
