I watched the game in Evanston, and will not suggest the Ball State game was an offensive masterpiece.

However........

The NU offense put up better numbers than it did in any game last season except the OT win @ND, where they rushed for 263 and had 547 yards of total offense. In that game JJ had a 66 yard rush, so skeptics cannot say that the rushing stats against BSU were inflated by his 62 yard scamper. Cam Dick also caught a 60 yard pass from Trevor, comparable to the Vitale strike Saturday night.

It sure didn't feel like it at the game, but NU was actually pretty impressive statistically. Yeah, I know, "stats are for losers"......

I was actually more encouraged after watching a replay of the game (I was unable to catch most of it Saturday night.). We moved the ball well most of the night, missed a couple of wide-open throws, missed what usually is an automatic FG for Mitchell, and ran a poor series inside the red zone after the long Jackson run. They were a couple of plays away from breaking the game open.

I won't lie, watching it live I almost left at halftime. But when I rewetted the game on tape I had the same reaction you did. And all credit to BSU, they played their asses off.

The 'Cats put up more yds on BSU and limited them to fewer yds than did TAMU, but the final score of the TAMU game was prettier.

Some self-inflicted wounds and missed opportunities prevented a larger margin of victory, but at the same time, think BSU players played more physical and the BSU staff had the better game plan against the 'Cats than did Stanford or Duke.

One thing we are getting early in this season as opposed to last season is many more EXPLOSION PLAYS. Now, we need to start converting better in the red zone. If we do that, we can be a contender in the BIG WEST.
