Seasons so close, but not much to talk about.... ESPN is putting together a list of 50 players that could have breakout years. Deonte Gibson was #48.

48. Deonte Gibson, DE, Northwestern

Gibson, a fifth-year senior, has shown promise over the course of a career held back by injuries. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said Gibson will have that long-awaited big season, provided he is able to stay on the field.

"I really do [believe that]," Fitzgerald said. "He's had an awesome offseason. He's up to 270 pounds. He's physical and he's as healthy as he's been since he got to campus."

With continued progress from senior Dean Lowry and junior Ifeadi Odenigbo, Fitzgerald said Gibson could be dangerous as "that guy who gets a single block that people forget about."

I don't understand what that means. Somebody want to expand on that so I can be excited too.
You have 5-6 guys blocking 4 if you only send the Dline in after the QB. Let's say the Dline is Odenigbo, Robbins, Lowry, and Gibson. This is 3rd and 8 and an obvious passing down. The offense is going to put 1 double team on Lowry because he's the best. Then they'll put the back on Odenigbo's side because he's the pass rusher. Maybe they'll even have a TE give him a shoulder chip before running a route. Now Gibson and Robbins have 1 on 1 matchups. Gibson exploits that and hits the QB so hard his girlfriend dies.

In other words, NU had too many other guys along the defensive front the offense was worried about that Gibson got "forgotten" and they didn't get to double team him.

He LOOKS in great shape and I think he can be much improved this year.

Hits the QB so hard his GF dies? Really? With all of the talk about CTE these days you should be ashamed of yourself for that comment.

I was quoting the program. In that movie, the quote is hit the tight end so hard his girlfriend dies. I like that movie and that scene and while insensitive, I'm ok with it. Here's the scene:

I was giving you a hard time shakes. You of all people know I'm the least sensitive person on the planet. I love The Program and I love Alvin Mack
