Is there anyone on the board who would advocate keeping either coordinator?

I’ve been on the fence all year, but at this point, no more. I thought the D did ok today but the Purdue offense missed many opportunities. And the NU O…ugh.

"We lost all our quarterbacks." - Fitz on why Jake gets another year.

"The defense improved steadily all season." - Fitz on why JON gets another year.

Yep, my money is on that (lack of) logic by the ever-optimistic Fitz.
The problem, from my very non-expert perspective, is that Fitz will only fire someone when he is CERTAIN they can't right the ship. Too worried about the missed opportunity that he is falling hard for the needless blunder (special nod to the late Kellogg Prof. Keith Murnighan on the missed opp/needless blunder conundrum, which I learned in his Decision Making class, one of the best I ever took as a student at any level).

This season has affirmed his priorities:

1. His autonomy
2. His staff
3. The seniors
4. The program
5. The players
6. Whatever else...media, fans, etc.

7. Winning football games.

11 straight losses after next game. 4-20 in last 2 years. 14-31 in past 4 years. Who else could survive that?
I think it's also very important to point out he's got new facilities coming out the nose - every coach's wet dream, no? Squandered the shine of the new Ryan Fieldhouse, and they had to announce the new stadium under the dark cloud of the current stretch.

Oh, god. Possibly three straight bad years? And four out of five?

I hope this is just coach speak in public. If he makes no changes, he's a fool.

I am in favor of keeping the staff intact for a few more years—though they do need to show improvement with on-field results. The team is less talented than their opponent every week, but they still play hard and haven’t quit. That is a testament to the character of the team and to Fitz and his staff.

As long as they play with good sportsmanship, have a stellar graduation rate, have no scandals, and surprise with a good season every 4-5 years I will be a happy alum. And I know that I am not alone with those sentiments.

I believe you are missing one component--coaching.

Thanks for saying this. My friends, SadCat just beautifully laid out the top reason why the program is in its current state. While he couldn't be more wrong about having less talent than every opponent we face, he nailed it when he said that we have too many fans who don't want a winning program. It's like thinking poverty is virtuous.

Have you considered that the coaching is better than you think? We have played really good teams and kept the scores close. With subpar coaching, we could be losing these games by 5+ touchdowns.

In the new college football landscape with NIL and the transfer portal, it is delusional to think that we will win games consistently. Replacing coaches will not fix that.

Hey Jim. Thanks for your input. I hope you have 7 days left in your NU coaching career.

Getting players to play hard is only one part of coaching. If you can’t see that these guys are poorly coached I don’t know what to tell you.

You make an excellent point, however how long can they continue with 3-9. or 1-11 seasons? It is now three out of four seasons. If it is not the coaches (and I believe in large part, it is), it is something else, and they need to fix one or both, and soon.

Man, imagine how bad those games against powerhouses Miami (OH) and Southern Illinois would have been with subpar coaching!
