A season of close calls

It's coming though. Not too long from now. We are competitive in every game...

Seems to me I recall 30+ point blowouts by Indiana, and MSU as well as a blowout by Iowa and Maryland that were softened by late scores when the game was already well decided. I guess we were at least competitive at the start of those games.

I'm a huge fan of Collins and see progress, but let's keep it real. Nice season, fewer blowouts, we beat the teams we should beat, but couldn't find a way to win against almost all of the others...B-. Perhaps the 5th best season in the past 10 years, but we still have a way to go before we're a legit NCAA tourney team. Olah and Demps need to be replaced and we need to find a forward who can drive and create shots. We'll get there, but it will take a few years, IMO.

If probably say 2nd or 3rd best. Definitely not 5, but I know what you're doing anyway...lol

No sabotage. He fired him. What's your point? An AD should absolutely have his guys in there as the head coaches. What's the big deal? I like Collins and have no doubt that the NU bball program is in its best shape ever.

That's actually a good post. As for my point, it was in the OP, which was very non-confrontational. Was I mistaken or did I speak ill of someone? I believe YOU made the thread confrontational, no? Glades and I joke around all the time. Why is it okay for you to throw out insults. Seems hypocritical to me...

You seem to be not capable of tolerating any positive mention of the prior regime nor any suggestion that there were some mistakes made by Collins in the schedule making for this season.

Where have I "not tolerated" any positive mention of the prior regime? There lots of times I don't say a word. But every once in a while, I do, and a certain group loses their sh*t over any criticism. Yet they don't have problems dishing it to Collins and Philips (was it not you that called Phillips "a pussy"??) But it's not allowed to ever be directed at Carmody??

I'll take responsibility for my role. But you're ignorant if you don't think the problem is two-fold. Would you agree?

I thought Phillips handled the Carmody firing very badly. Disrespectfully. Like a pussy. But I also felt that it was time for a change and that Carmody could not and would never be able to recruit the kind of talent it would take to be competitive in the Big Ten. And, by the way, I think Phillips is a helluva AD and wouldn't trade him for anyone.

I completely disagree with your assessment of Phillips handling it like a "pussy", much like you disagree with some of my assessments. But it's nice we can do that without getting angry with each other and throwing about insults...

Just asking but how else does an AD fire a coach, other then telling him that 13 years was enough? Is the AD supposed to ask the coach if it's OK to fire him and give him a "golden parachute" of cash to add to the millions NU had already paid him? It sure is odd that you think of him as a hell of an AD and then call him a "pussy".

4th.

Assuming could change if we play in Vegas or CBI.

We are competitive against the mid tier Big Ten teams and are beating the bad teams. That puts us in the middle of the pack and poised for improvement if we can replace Olah and Demps. It's good progress and we should be optimistic.

Hope we get to keep playing.

Also...no Vic Law all season. Pretty impressive to still have that kind of season...

I'm hoping that Vic Law makes a big leap next year, but he didn't set the world on fire last year. He has a lot of room for improvement and I don't think huge expectations are fair to him.

I agree with jules. Jim should have fired Carmody as soon as Jim came on the scene. That would have taken some guts but at least Jim would not have had to half-heartedly back Carmody for a while. That was exasperating.

There's only one person who loses his crap and it's you, over and over, and always about the same one or two things. Your remarks are always way overboard and beyond reason.

What I'm saying is, had I associated "pussy" and Carmody in ANYTHING (and I do think he acted like one a couple times), I can only imagine the insane blowback from the usuals. They have extreme thin skin when it comes to Carmody, but don't like any defensiveness over Collins and Phillips. Both ways??

I mean...just look at where this thread went. It's the perfect example. My OP was absolutely non-confrontational. But guess who came in guns blazing...?

Yeah I don't know why we would say no to Vegas16 or CBI. Vegas has already been tweeting at NU accounts.
Teddy Greenstein column just posted seemed to say that we would not do CBI or CIT, but would think about Vegas16. Hope they pull the trigger.

I think he probably would have made the difference in one extra, possibly two extra wins...

His stats don't bear that out. He shot 39% from the field, averaged 7.0 PPG, and had more turnovers than assists. He has a long way to go, but the good news is that he has three years to get there.

Looking at the box score of today's game, you had 0 points from Falzon and 1 point from Lumpkin. You can not win against NCAA level teams when you get no production from 2 of your starters and you have no NBA level players. McIntosh played great and Demps and Olah played well. Next year, we will return two four star players in Law and Rapolas I., and a skilled and developing big man in Benson and a guy who can score in Brown. Those recruits should be able to contribute and we will have 10 Collins recruits which means more athletic and well rounded basketball players. The future is bright. But credit should go to Tre and Olah for being excellent senior leaders and players during their NU careers.

The president of the university had Carmody's back. What's half hearted about letting him hire two well paid assistants and refurbishing thw locker rooms. Also, let's not forget that he was well compensated by NU for 13 years.

Life would be easier if Virginia went FitzPhile on is. We wouldn't have to rehash stuff. What's the bet?

The idea that is Phillips is at fault for giving Carmody 5(!) additional years to succeed, but was wrong to fire him when he did is simply mind-boggling. I can't even...

Rehash what? Who started all the Carmody threads? Me? Go count how many times I actually posted in any of them. How about you just grow a thicker skin.

Do you think Phillips is a pussy too?

I wasn't blaming you, I was just stating a fact. Life would be easier if you had a different handle.

If you were CatFan200, and wrote something like your OP, it would have been ignored, or gotten 'right on, bro'. (If you were BillyCRulz, and wrote the same thing, the response would've been 'yeah but Billy wasn't ever close and heeees a beeeetch.')

I wish your name were CatFan2000, or maybe a name that references Family Guy, or LilEsch, or JeffBackesIsDaMan or something.

Lol! Fair enough!

Phillips came here to NU in spring 2008, when we were coming off a bad 8-22 record. Phillips did not fire Carmody. Maybe it was Bienen's influence or maybe Phillips was gunshy having just arrived. The next four years, Carmody racked up 17, 20, 20, and 19 wins. Phillips could not or would not fire Carmody then. Looking back, Phillips should have fired Carmody in spring 2008.

Agreed.
I do believe we'll be in the 68 next year.
I also believe, based on my roller coaster today, that I will struggle to handle Selection Sunday unless we're like 27-6
