So during the "BALL STATE" game (Hi, Willycat) I was in Evanston for my college roommate and fraternity brother's wedding at Alice Millar. I was staying in Northbrook on points at a Marriott Property, the Renaissance Chicago North.
So as it turns out, that's the same hotel the team was staying in. On my way down to the breakfast buffet (which was amazing) I bumped into Fitz and he was nice enough to say hello and we talked for a few brief moments. He was just hanging around in the hotel lobby sitting next to his son.
I also saw coach Marty Long and coach Jerry Brown (whose daughter I was friends with during her time at NU).
A few observations:
-When the team walked by, my first thought was "wow, they are HUGE." For those that don't know me, I"m 5'11 230 so I'm not the smallest guy in the world but everyone was bigger than me. Having been at NU during a very significant time during our team's history...1999-2002, when we were very good, I can say the team is much bigger.
Cam Dickerson is one of my fraternity brothers (as is Warren Long, who I didn't see) and he and I spoke briefly. He's very big. Nice size and he assured me he'd play that game and he did. I didn't expect us to struggle with ball state, but we watched the game during the latter half of my roommates wedding reception, even though a poster here said I wasn't going to watch it. I hadn't planned too, but it was cool to be at a wedding of an NU alum and fellow football fan and he wanted the game on in the lounge of the reception hall so we all sweated out the last few moments.
Anyway...it's so cool to be in the hotel with the team. See them walking in and out of meetings and around the hotel. Guys you normally only see on TV. Made my weekend and I hope that happens again when they come to town for the Orange Bowl CFB Playofff semi final game. Me and Coral Springs cat will set up shop and be in all-purple.
I'm dreaming big on that one but hey...it could happen! Check out this pic with my other old NU roommate. He's was a pretty decent player at NU. You may have heard of him.
