An open letter to Drs. Schill and Gragg

Nice job Lou. Leadership has to come from somewhere. Just hope someone in NU leadership- president/AD/faculty senate/trustees step up. I agree with publicly releasing the full report with redactions as needed and also agree to make the investigator(s) involved in the report available to the press. The handling of this by leadership has been “inadequate” if not inept. This slow leak of info is death by a thousand cuts for all those involved.

As an aside, it would be useful to know if all players were subject to “running” or to be placed on “Shrek’s list” or if only freshmen and/or walk-ons were targeted as some kind of “initiation”. Were only upperclassman involved as “enforcers”? This hazing situation is somewhat remindful of the classic Stanford Zimbardo experiment from the seventies with those assigned roles as guards and prisoners which quickly devolved into “bad behavior” by those assigned roles as guards and submission and depression for those assigned the inmate roles. Of note- Zimbardo, the psychologist running the experiment was blind to the harm the experiment was having on the participants in the experiment. It took threats from another academic psychologist colleague before the experiment was terminated after 6 days.

There. I feel a little better now. Not really.

I think Lou's suggestion of releasing the redacted report still stands. With the wild speculation we're seeing from both sides, it's probably more relevant than ever. If people don't know the details, then they'll make up their own.

Really good shot, Lou. Saves many of the rest of us from writing something similar.

NU football is adrift at sea and without a rudder.

I feel like the whole university and alums and fans/supporters/donor and faculty/staff are adrift, maybe adrift on the Titanic after hitting a giant iceberg. It will be interesting to see how the local alumni groups react. The last session I attended months before this blowup featured the trustee representing SoCal. So far nothing but crickets chirping from the alumni groups
and from NU to alums. Another example of non-communication reflective of current leadership.

Not a bad analogy.

Being one to never pass up a photo op, here are some views from our initial day in Las Vegas this month:

It was actually a pretty somber visit as the life of the collector of most of the memorabilia had just been lost. Putting things in perspective I reflect back on one of Lou's initial comments as he reminded that Northwestern Football would go on - "No one has died."

Nice pics Alaska! In fairness I did receive an email from Bob McQuinn, Vice President, Alumni Relations and Development that was sent out with a copy of the statement from the NU president a few hours ago.

Another analogy may be “A Few Good Men”. I think about “Code Reds” which was hazing directed (or *tolerated*) by higher officers where underperforming recruits like Santiago were subjected to hazing. In the movie Code Reds were officially not allowed by the Navy brass but some Marine line commanders like Col. Jessop said “off the record he considered Code Reds to be essential as part of Marine discipline.” At the end of the movie Hal disagrees with Pfc. Downey that they had done nothing wrong. Hal says they deserved being discharged for conduct unbecoming because they failed to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves.

Of course there is the classic quote from Jessop that “You can’t handle the truth”. I think we are all struggling to deal with information as it emerges from different sources. It may take a courtroom to find the truth, or some semblance of it.

The last line of the letter from Pres. Schill that was sent out by Bob McQuinn of Alumni Relations reads:
"I hope your summer is providing you with time for rest and reflection."

Implied: Like it has been for our AD.
