NU had its Purple-White scrimmage today. Check out Anthony Gaines’ stat line. Wow.

Yep, Gaines is the real deal (with apologies to Darnell Autry). I couldn't wait until the end of the scrimmage to rave about his skill set, so I started a thread at halftime. Very impressive freshman who plays with a lot of maturity.

Brown was the only guy who didn't dress, so my guess would be illness or minor injury. He was there and in good spirits.

Gaines looked really good - Big Ten body, athletic, confident, lots of hustle. He'll definitely contribute this year.

Gaines could fill the Sanjay role, and maybe more, this season.

He's the best slasher on the team by far. His shot looks fine on free throws but he didn't shoot from outside that I saw. He's not tall enough to fill the Sanjay role, though.

Law, Lindsey, McIntosh and Pardon led the team tonight. Their games continue to develop and mature. Skelly has developed a nice baseline jumper and always seems to get his hand on a ball or take a charge and hit a key three. He and Falzon will battle for minutes. His game has developed. But Gaines is impressive. He takes the ball to hole with authority and has more offensive skill as a true freshman than any player that I have seen at NU. He might force CC to go with three wing players with Law, Lindsey and Gaines. If not, he will bring a big spark off the bench.

Gaines looked good, trying to make some things happen. A little like Brown last year, sometimes trying to do too much, but a good slashing attitude challenging guys. Brown on the bench with a deep thigh bruise. Vic Law scare at the end of the first half, turned an ankle and was limping...but he came back later and played. He seemed a bit tentative after that...

BMac, solid and in control, Scottie, confident and delivering...Falzone not much of a presence. Benson gaining confidence and aggressiveness. Nice progress. Skelly solid and buried a nice long 3 before the half....Ash, looked much more mature and confident too. Pardon is fluid and always around the rebounds. Love that guy.

A) Another "wow" for Gaines. He can seemingly drive the ball to the hole at will.

I'm not sure we had much of a chance to see if he has an outside shot.
B) Keep in mind they only played 16-minute halves.
C) Collins told a reception that Brown was kneed in the thigh earlier in the week. The deep bruise was why he didn't play.
D) I believe Law left the game due to a minor injury (ankle??).
E) It's only one game, but watch for Pardon to take more of a leadership role this year. He was awfully vocal out there tonight. He's playing with a lot of confidence.
F) Was it just me or was that more than a little exhibition? That was a pretty hard-fought, competitive game. That was no walk through.
G OTOH, I don't think the refs called it like a regular season game. It was pretty loose.
H) Collins didn't directly coach either team, and he said he was going to sit back and let the assistants do all the work. He was nowhere near "sitting back."
I) Nate Taphorn was in da house.
J) Brrrrrrrrr! It was freezing in there. (I think it was) Jordan Ash was blowing on his hands during introductions.
Last) If youve ever seen a concert at the House That Terry Cummings Built, you understand this is where sounds goes to before to die before it becomes a Taylor Swift song. The sound system in that place was worse than the Welsh ever was.

Am I getting old or could you only understand about 10% of what was said tonight?

Place is the Tundra. Bring your gloves to hold your beer.

This is why NU doesn't need an exhibition game this season. No need to put anyone at risk with a deep, veteran team.

Practices are pretty competitive too, could easily happen there as well. A longer "scrimmage" helps simulate a game and get their legs.

I thought the scrimmage started at 6 pm and saw the shoot around before the 7 pm scrimmage. Gaines has good form on his shot. He is a freshman even though his game and body do not look one so he will have his off days shooting but he can dribble. penetrate draw fouls when that happens.

AJ Turner's line was interesting. 29 min, 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists. He will be a factor for us after he sits out his year, and will be a big help in practices this year.

Gaines and Ash are the pleasant surprises this year! I really see the development of Ash as the main reason we get to the final four as we now have a legit guard who can work side by side, along with spelling BMAC when tired. Ash was even percentage wise from the field with BMAC, but Mac took four more shots. Ash had two more assists than Bmac! Also, Ash had two more rebounds than MAC! We need the physicality of Ash who will play "On Sundays" in the NFL/NBA. I would call it "dead even" today between MAC and ASH!

I hope Ash plays great this year, but you should consider submitting this to the Journal of Irreproducible Results.

Isn't Turner a grad transfer who's immediately eligible?

Not a grad transfer, will have 2 years of eligibility after sitting this season. Cats are playing the season with 11 scholarship players. Fingers crossed for a healthy one!

This entire time I thought he got his degree from BC in 3 years and was in grad school right now, sucks... still, Sweet 16 or bust

By November 12th Gaines will be signed by the GSW, replace steph curry, lead them to the NBA championship and replace Michael Jordan as the game's most iconic player

Don't worry, Cats fans . . . ain't gonna happen. Sure, it sounds like a probable scenario, but there's a major flaw in the logic . . . Gaines isn't eligible for the NBA yet. The NBA championship / icon status will have to wait a year. :(
