Anti -"hands in the air" petition

They played that song at the Miami-FAU game on Friday night. Had a bit of a chuckle when it came on...it did get a pretty good response from the crowd.

My grandson loved it. I like it. People who hate it are a drag. They are the same people who refuse to wear a costume to a Halloween party. NU fans consist of an inordinate amount of self-conscious mopes. We will never get a cool tradition.

It's likely the only newer "tradition" that NU can claim as theirs. It should remain,If for no other reason then it gets some of the mopes out of their seats and it sure beats the stupid key jangling exercise. Your right that it's the same mopes who don't wear Halloween costumes and don't wear purple to the games. Maybe shorten the introduction but keep it unless some the complainers can come up with something better.

Traditions I like: The "Trust Yourself" bar, playing "Sweet Home Chicago" after home wins, using the 'Cats growl as often as possible.

I thought the "famous Internet cat of the week" video gag was clever, creative and hilarious. Props to whoever thought of that. Christian Jones' "tiger...Siberian tiger" line and the "there's one type of cheese: American" were very funny as well.

The song, well, it's dumb, but it's our dumb now and it gets people up. Best part is that it's not Seven Nation Army.

Let's say for the moment that you are 100% accurate. You/grandson like it, self conscious mopes that don't wear halloween costumes don't like it. (and the whole no cool traditions thing).

It doesn't mean it doesn't suck. Is the purpose to be a sideshow like the fans kicking field goals (which I like)? If so, then it is uninteresting but so what. If the purpose, in any way, is to get the fans or the TEAM charged up and ready to beat some heads in Q4, whilst simultaneously making the visitors a little nervous that Q4 is going to be tough, then my allegation is that this has precisely the opposite effect - that the fans that were shouting moments earlier are now holding their head in their hands, and the other team has to go to the john for fear of pi$$ing their pants laughing.

Although I don't like the song or the activity, I don't object to it being done during gameday, just not, you know, during the actual GAME.

The issue is that it drags on for too long, and they're out of celebrities to actually do the intro. I say skip the intro and keep it to 45 seconds. Any more than that 80% of the crowd has completely stopped another 15% are looking around hoping it ends and the last 5% are under 5.

It's a bad song, but they had to pick a song with a "fun motion" in it and didn't get the right one, but it's ours and we've got to stick with it. Personally, I I would've gone with Jump by Kris Kross

I wish we had a good crowd tradition. We don't and haven't in the 20 years I've been attending games. This one is possibly the lamest attempt of the 20 years. But if people like it, I'm all for it.

I would sign a million times if I could.
Yep fans don't matter at all. Fun traditions are stupid. Cheerleaders are pointless. Bands are lame. Let's just have the team play in the middle of nowhere in a corn field where nobody can bother them. Would this work for you:

What we really need is for them to go back in time and install a new tradition so that we can be proud of a tradition that's been around for years and doesn't feel invented.

My dad sits in the dead alum section 127. I finally could not take it and moved to the East side. I have been coming to Dyche/Ryan since 1974 and I love hands in the air. It does kinda suck but it is ours! I love the trust yourself sign too. Brad North is just a funny person in general. So I guess we need to get over ourselves and try to have some fun.

It's from a terrible TV show that I loved called Blue Mountain State.
Basically, the last episode they spoof field of dreams and the insane linebacker does too many drugs, hears voices, and digs up the kicker's marijuana field (in the middle of a corn field) and play a rematch against the team they lost to in the national title game.

Basically, what I'm pointing out is Debbie Downer wants no fun, just football, and nothing to distract the fragile psychies of the football team.

Don't forget how useless specialists are.

There is if you quit whining and just go with it. The first step to being cool is not caring what people think of you...just go for it.

I did the first couple times. It was fun. Both the team and crowd seemed to actually get some energy out of it.

But now it's basically just 40% of the crowd awkwardly moving their hands around without any kind of added energy to the team or crowd. I understand that the marketing people were trying to "create" a tradition, but this one is no longer serving its purpose.

Time to cut bait and try something else.

OK this is not about the fact that it's stupid, it's about the fact that our team empirically sucked in the 4th quarter the year we started this

I documented this somewhere before, but the year we started this "tradition" (which is the opposite of what the word tradition means" we blew 4th quarter leads to MSU and someone else

Persa then tore his achilles in the 4th quarter that seasons

Everything about 4th quarters sucked that year

I hate this "tradition" so much

Where do you sit?

My tickets are on the east side but we moved to west for 2nd half and I was actually pleasantly surprised with how many people participated as I looked across. I agree with Shakes that it goes on too long though.

I don't mind it but let's try to limit it to individuals, preferably alums. Saturday's was basically shilling for WGN radio.

It seems to me like they wait way too long into the time out to actually do it.. often after 2 or 3 other time out events. Sometimes they almost don't get it in before they have lined up for the next play. By then everyone is ready for the game, not the silly song.

I like it. Mrs. Astro likes it. The friends we come to games with, they like it. The kids in the stands seem to love it. I agree that it should be shortened a bit, as it does go on a bit too long. But on Saturday, I noticed several players getting into it, including one whose dancing was amazing. I suspect that those who complain about the song would not put their hands up in the air even for the YMCA song, which effectively puts them into the having-fun-is-uncool crowd.

Preach it, brother. I'm sure the complainers are the same people who sit on their dead asses during a wedding reception complaining that the music is too loud.

A "tradition" I really liked was the whom the bell tolls playing on 3rd down that was pretty cool

We sit in the east stands. Our area has a lot of families and a number of couples. I agree with you. Since the female spouses and the younger kids like it, it should remain. I like seeing the kids and students on the screen. It does make many people get out of their seats. Since I have seen the negative posts, I will now encourage more folks to participate in the hands in the air.

The best part of the game on Saturday, outside of the play, was the young man who won the football toss. They are now going to change the rules of that game

Yeah, I agree. As I said before, I don't care for it, but if others do, I am all for it, and the others that matter are the students, players, and kids, not us old timers - in fact, if we don't like it, it means it's probably a good thing.

It's hard to invent a new tradition, but screaming "purple" at the appropriate time in "America the Beautiful" was a tradition that started in the early 1990s and I hope still continues today. Yes, it only lasts for a second, but it's something.

That was great - he almost got it several times. What do you mean about changing the rules? I assume make it harder?

I started the thread because I loathe the tradition/practice/idea/song/whatever.

For contrast, I regularly walk over to Orioles games and they have some funny, irreverent traditions in which I gladly participate: "thank God I'm a country boy' blares at the seventh inning stretch, and during the national anthem, when the get toward the last stanza and finish "when our flag was still there", everyone shouts "O" at the top of their lungs O..say does that star spangled....etc. Funny, ridiculous, yet not cringeworthy.

Maybe I will get used to it if it hangs around for 10 years. I got used to the Cat growl that we ripped off from Penn State, so...

interesting to read in the comments that the football players leadership council rejected the idea, but the powers that be went ahead with it anyhow. (assuming that the comments left on an internet petition can be taken as truth, at least?)

Rather than destruct the tradition you don't like, perhaps construct one you do.

I will suggest a fun tradition-to-be: the unveiling of a white flag with purple W at the closing gun. This tradition will gain greater hops after the events of the October baseball season in Chicago. It was fun to do in Notre Dame Stadium last November, I'll tell you that.

Guess the Cubs have made it. Stealing their signature W is the true form of flattery. Maybe they should play Hey, The Cubs(WILDCATS) are going to Win Today
