I write to the NU alum here. The school and athletic department are embroiled in controversy. Some of you want lessered admissions for a more competitive team. Some of you reject such a thought based on your perception of the prestige of the school. Over the last few days, we have witnessed a product, undeniably, of the football program speak about NUFB until deleted. And I think, as alum, as former athletes, it’s worth discussion. Maybe I’ll get capped. But regardless of which side you land, do any of you want to see the result of wearing purple lead you, your kids, or anyone headed to NU to become broken?

I am now very familiar with CMT and the period he was in the program. For a long time, he was a very rational and appreciated member here. I remember him challenging me to a fight that was celebrated by many that dislike me that now call him to be gone. He was another former player in our ranks.

I have noticed a few things. First, none of the former FB players participate here anymore. The lawyer in me has a feeling why. I bet those accounts have been deleted. They still read but know enough to believe this forum could be used against them in this situation . Second, CMT changed dramatically in the last year. He was an OL. I will guess CTE is on the table. But he seems to have progressed to a normal and successful life until recently. What happened?

Let’s talk about triggers. In the criminal investigative world, long rooted defects often lie dormant until triggered. In the last year or so, we have seen the hazing topic rise. Let’s put the PF performance to the side for the moment. Consider the possibility that the past 18 months triggered a well adjusted former player to what we have witnessed. Again, i challenge you to examine his contributions before then.

Then take some of these other player reports and give pause. Again, I write to our alum. I was friends with a very NFL body type LT that just quit. I don’t know to this day why. But hearing all this doesn’t make me proud. And I bleed purple despite what anyone here says.

Also doesn’t make me want to hide it. I want to know. I love our academic reputation that broke through athletically and became nationally relevant. I played in the Taylor days and have my own stories.

But let’s talk openly about it. Doesn’t mean NU sucks or the current department is crap (though many of you speak about gragg and the department so…)

But can we be open to the discussion and let things air? I’m not a safe space guy but seems like it would be great to let guys talk about things that went wrong and maybe how it’s getting better?

But shame on those that won’t look at our missteps. As important as our rose bowl and ncaa berths are our failures. I really hope Cappy didn’t cap CMT. It would be a terrible way to respond to someone our program may possibly have created.

I think you are overanalyzing the whole thing while using a lawyers silver tongue to not get yourself boxed in. Speculating while backing off just enough so that you won't get into trouble "It might be....", "Now I am not sure however...", "Not sure this is due CTE injury but...". "I am friends with a NFL player, not sure what the issue was with him...." etc.

Thanks for the post but IMO you are overthinking posts by a person who has some issues that may or may not be related to his time at NU. He does not have to air them here.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I’m still here Bob! And Still Speaking the Truth.

I have been blasting Schill and the Northwestern BoT on LinkedIn too; I let you all know more details of course.

NUFB didn’t create me; I got off the team in 2003 and didn’t miss (I remained friends with many of the guys; some tried to recruit me back). McCormick was more important to me than football ever was.

I am glad I quit early or my CTE would be worse.

And remember: I got you confused with the other xyz poster who hated Thorson.

I think I said I would sit on you/the xyzfg guy; not necessarily fight. I had beers that evening.

I think it was the Akron game. What a mess!

(Alcohol is poison BTW. Marijuana is legal in NJ. Trump doesn’t care)

I started therapy in 2012 after my older brother, who is now deceased, turned himself in for an armed robbery in Ohio.

I worked through the hazing abuse then (I had a high stress job and other issues… I’m all good now, and a father too), and thought it was just a weird thing. I’m glad I did; therapy strengthened me. I don’t care what people say about me on the internet. I Have met many folks from the board. I never would have been such a big fan if I had known Fitz ignored the hazing for years while building his own ego.

When the news hit… I had what is called “Survivor’s Guilt”. That is why I reached out to Ben Crump & crew.

last I heard? It sounded like a LOT of athletes have spoken out.

The lawyers have plenty of evidence. The many cell phone videos are allegedly disturbing. I have not seen them and don’t want to.

Most are from football; but other programs may have had worse hazing (without the shower humping stuff).

Censorship is unfortunate. We should not fear opinion. I appreciate the many views expressed here — however random, informed or irrational — as they collectively comprise a window through which we can find connection, trust and truth (which, I believe, arrive in such order).

I agree.

LinkedIn (owned by Microsoft) has not censored me, but Rivals simply deletes my posts (Rivals, as @CappyNU and @lou v most certainly know, is owned by Yahoo and Verizon - I live near Verizon’s HQ; everything is stored digitally).

Here was my letter of thanks from last evening.

Remember: I have opened accused Schill, Gragg, and the NU BoT of decades of negligence on LinkedIn using my real name.

More to come. 👍
