Pasting NU portion to save you the link/scroll. This shows that they pay no attention to us. The only thing they got right was crappy offense. Maybe they only interviewed Iowa and Rutgers coaches

Northwestern

"Looking at this team from year to year, it's pretty much a broken record now: You know exactly what you're getting on defense, and you respect the hell out of it, and you have no idea what's coming on offense, but chances are it will be pretty bad."

"The more time you spend in this league, the more you respect Fitz [Pat Fitzgerald] as a program manager. Their guys model their play off the head coach. He has great culture, and he has great communication within the program."

"Defensively, they're great; they like to get after you in the secondary, and when they have experience up front, they can give you hell."

"The issue with the program is how inconsistent they've become with the offense. It's not a mystery: There's no consistency with the running back and quarterback, and there's not enough talent at receiver. If the [Ryan] Hilinski kid is their guy, they need to ride with him."

"The good news is that they're maybe the best in the nation at changing circumstances quickly. They've had bad seasons that were a series of single-possession losses, and the next year they're efficient enough on offense to come right back and get on a run. That's possible this season, too, although they're drawing a pretty nasty schedule. Finding an established starter at quarterback could get them to .500, and that would be a huge success building towards the future."

Seems to have book on NU.
But then who doesn't?

All true statements. We need a QB1 we can rely on badly
No. The comments about always tough defense are just wrong. The defense was ass last year and, while it may somehow improve, there is no reason that an opposing coach could assume that. They just didn't pay attention toast year's team.

The first 3 quotes seem like they're from before 2021. 2nd quote is just a general quote about Fitz/program.

The 4th quote seems like a new quote.

5th quote seems like a general statement about the past 4 years.

I mean, what do we expect? I said this last week in the thread about the Chicago media not paying attention to Northwestern: Nobody cares about a 3 win Northwestern except our fanbase.

It's not interesting.

We have to be a team that goes to bowls most years; we have to be in the hunt for competitive 8-10 win seasons often enough.

We've been that in the past, but last year was the bottom falling out of the program. When you get pasted 56-7 by a 3 win Nebraska team; that's going to kill interest in the team.

Except those quotes were by other coaches, not the media.

Same thing though.

Why would any other coach spare a thought about us coming off last year's season and if we're picked again to finish last?

The other coaches in the league care about us when we beat them in the previous year or have a good team or are projected to have a good team. And we're not on the Rutgers schedule this year so even Schiano wouldn't really care.

Every TV station in town was there for media day so I don't think you are correct with your premise.

Sure, but Chicago's the heart of the conference footprint with the most Big Ten alums of any city in the country. They have to cover the conference's media days.

I bet opposing coaches hate to play a Pat Fitzgerald team. Big picture, Fitz often figures out a way to win.

Oh please stop already! Chicago media doesn't HAVE TO cover anything they don't think is newsworthy. Fitz has made NU football a brand in football (aided by previous success of Barnett and Walker), much as Ray Meyer did for DePaul hoops (which is struggling to get back) and Porter Moser did for Loyola. And incidentally, Chicago media didn't give much coverage at all to the BIG media day. BTN had that all to themselves, pretty much. The Bears are the only MUST COVER for Chicago media even when they are bad.

@Catreporter nailed it.

I agree with you, and it doesn't change the fact that we have to be good to break through locally and nationally. Chicago is an event town with a ton of strong pro brands and fans of ND, Michigan, Illinois, and other schools as well.

Coming off a 3 win season and being picked last in the division in the media poll tells you where we are...

Even Fitz acknowledged that when he joked about getting so few questions at Big Ten media day as the moderator asked for more questions and he said "That's what happens when you win 3 games."

I'm as hopeful as any Cat fan that we get this turned around, but even Fitz is going to acknowledge that we have to avoid any sort of prolonged slump because interest falls off quickly and is hard to build back up.

Unfortunately that was the old book and last year indicated that what he was saying about D is maybe no longer true

Big picture - Fitz has built a brand of football at NU that features a solid defense and a fairly conservative offense. That is basically what the other coaches expect. Things could go wrong like last year, but overall, the other coaches know and respect the Fitz teams, which are generally well-coached, mistake-free, wins the turnover battle, etc.

I wouldn’t pay too much attention to these anonymous surveys. It just gives a coach a chance to say something derogatory about a team that they can then show to recruits that both teams are in contention to land.
