Behind the Cheddar Curtain
I know the attendance number in the box score is total tickets sold and/or distributed, not the actual number of humans in the seats. I'm guessing less than 10,000 people will show up for this game, and that might be a generous expectation. If anyone has inside info I'd love to know.

It really is a chance to show support for players who have decided to stay. It is also a chance to show that the players and fans have a commitment to the University as a whole. I am 100% behind Fitz and letting this thing play out. But I think as a fan it would be a mistake to make the first game or attending games in general as a referendum on the actions of Schill and Gragg and a protest to bring Fitz back...I hope fans come out in droves this has been a difficult year for those players.

I have season tickets and guess I’ll attend 1-2 games. I do look forward to selling my wrigley tickets to Iowa fans.

Guess would be around 20k about 80% of last year’s first couple of home games against Duke and Southern.

To what extent is decrease in attendance will be attributed to: reported hazing incidents, coming off a 1-11 season, playing UTEP, or some other factor (weather, other events in Chicago, etc.) will be source for a few articles or comments in game reports

If we beat Rutgers we might be the "story of the week" in college football leading to a big turnout for the first home game (can Braun and the boys keepn winning?).

Go Cats!

not attending the games is the wrong ay to protest Fitz's firing or administration's handling. The stands reflect support of the team that remains to play the games. There are people on the bench who just need a chance on game day to be the best they can be,. Some are great practice players but ":meh" on game day while others are great game day players who, for some reason, don't practice well. If the offense opens up with an experienced QB at the helm, this team should have the support of the fans in person .

You are entitled to do as your heart desires. Seriously.
We all react differently.
I am disgusted with the way Fitzgerald was treated,
I mean really disgusted. Ashamed. Embarrassed that my alma mater is even capable of such wanton, misguided crap.

But my daughter is about to start classes for her senior year. NU has been a great bond for us. I took her and her brother to games every year from the time they were pre-schoolers until they were finished with high school. Now, she asks me to go to games and tailgates to meet her friends.

If she asks me to go to a game or two this year, I'll go. Thats far more important than my feelings about NU. If she doesn't ask me, I won't go.

From a purely "football" perspective, I liked the Braun hire a lot. Things were likely to improve sharply this year and I was looking forward to it. Now, because principles matter to me, hypocrisy repulses me and Schill is apparently a sanctimonious idiot, I can't.

Important to consider our 1-11 finish last season and 3-9 before that. Interest in the program is way down; the scandal we are currently facing might actually and literally yield some interest *IF* we beat Rutgers, because then the story becomes about Braun's ability to turn the program around.

I was planning to going to the @Rutgers game, but now will not.
I normally go to 2-3 home games but not any plans to as of now. Maybe that will change, we'll see. Particularly if Schill and Gragg get fired...

It’s a hard decision to choose between, supporting the team, who remain and demonstrating distain for the ministration that handled this whole process in a completely unprofessional manner. There are enough people, deciding not to attend games in order to demonstrate their distain for the administration, but that basically punishes the remaining team members, who also need the support of the same people I don’t know how the proper avenue is decided, and I agree that it is an individuals choice.

why did you expect things to improve sharply? I was expecting 10+ losses until the two transfers this spring, and even then, figured a 4 win ceiling. Losing JON was a plus, but what else?

I know you aren’t asking me, but I’d give three reasons: easy schedule, Jon gone, and regression to the mean. And a fourth: Fitz often did his best coaching when no one expected much from the team.

There’s also the possibility that Bajakian opens up the playbook significantly.

He and the entire “legacy” staff need to demonstrate they are quality coaches in the worst way.

Another positive of all the coaching turnover: all recent hires from this offseason could be retained as they weren’t around for the hazing. Braun and a number of position coaches could easily return in 2024, even if others don’t.

I like coaches who come from programs outside the Power-5 and have significant success.
Ideally they have nobody opening doors for them, but earn their career moves.
Ideally smaller town upbringing, fairly humble beginnings...

If you look at Braun's career, he started at Winona State as a grad assistant in 2008.
Then defensive coordinator at Culver-Stockton.
Then defensive coordinator back at Winona State.
Then defensive line coach at UC-Davis.
Then defensive line coach at Northern Iowa.
Then defensive coordinator at North Dakota State, which won two national titles in 4 seasons.

He played defensive line in college and was a team leader, so that (probably) brings some toughness with it.
My understanding was Braun's defenses brought pressure and tried to force turnovers, played aggressively. Fitzgerald took a chance with Braun, so I liked the hire, even though it was a significant step up for Braun.

Head coach is a different situation entirely.

I would be there despite the circumstances, but I have a scheduling conflict. My wife will be playing in the Alumni Band at MSU that weekend, so I am told I will be packing up the twins to go see her play, at least during rehearsal, since they are not yet old enough to sit through a game.

I also liked the hire as DC and he was really the only choice for interim. Mostly concern about getting crushed on both sides of LOS

The more I thought about this, the more I concluded that I would support the players that decided to stay through this shit storm. NU won’t get another dime from me until Schill and Gregg are terminated. However, supporting the men going through this is different than endorsing Bozo and Cookie. I will be booing as hard as I can anytime Schill or Gragg step on the field. Probably get the ban hammer from the Yellow jackets.

I totally respect that. And appreciate that of those who are going to attend rather than boycott, there will be some that are going to heartily boo these bozos.

Wouldn't be totally shocked if a plane flyover makes an appearance with a pointed message at Schill + Gragg for one of the home games.

I plan to be there. Not to make a point about anything, I just like watching NU football.
For me it's partly that I don't really feel like I want to go. Which is an incredible thing to say for me as someone that's been going to games since I was 6 years old, through thick and thin, would get my dad to drive down to Champaign with me every Tgiving weekend even when the weather was sh*t and the team sucked with no bowl hopes. Right now the idea of going to a game just makes me sad / mad / disgusted, it doesn't sound fun. That said, I will still watch the games on TV. At least to start the season. We will see how it goes.

I'm with you. Football is a game. It's fun to watch, at least for me. There's plenty of things in the world to get worked up over. The AD and President of a university is not one of them.

I am worked up, not sure how you can’t be worked up and the program you support gets ripped to shredded so much so that recovery at anytime is questionable.
