Annoying loss. Our shooting was bad and PSU did what they always do when they win, which is make tons of 3s. Two key stretches of the game, in my mind:

1) When PSU was turning it over and bricking everything early (our defense seemed to deteriorate too, as we again lost a second half). They were stuck on 7 points and we were up 10, for a very long stretch of time. We had SO many empty possessions, adamantly refusing to build the lead to even 15 or thereabouts. Then PSU rallied and it was clear we were in for a dogfight.

2) Mid/late 2nd half, NU finally found its groove on offense, briefly, with Brooks lighting it up and guys hitting big buckets. Every single time — every damn time — PSU came back down the floor, they answered. Often with 3s. I had the sense that a SINGLE stop during that stretch, followed by a bucket at the other end to stretch the lead beyond 3-6 points, would have put PSU up against a wall.

But we just could not pull away with a decisive run, in either case. Maddening. And the offense was mostly quite ugly. If you hold PSU to 61 points in regulation at home, you should win. And we didn’t.

We did get a taste of what that place can be as a true home court advantage where the whole place is purple. There were maybe 200 visiting fans in the whole building. Sold out, partisan, loud. Very cool to see. But there was never one big explosion of sound, even though the place was on the brink of one several times. Cats just didn’t get it done.

This season has been way too good to be too upset about any one loss, but 3 straight doesn’t feel great. The way the losses have gone down reminded me of…last year’s squad. It’s up to the coaches and the leaders on the floor to make sure mid/late Feb isn’t the high point of the season. They need to get their confidence back and not limp into the postseason.

MAKE SHOTS.

Should have won. Felt like a game where we should have been up 20 at half, but we wasted too many chances. We actually shot better from 3 than 2, and the night was sort of summed up when Penn St had a turnover in the second half which led to both Buie and Beran missing layups.

Frustrating because Berry and Barnhizer are giving us scoring depth, but now Audige has largely lost his offensive mojo (2-10 tonight)

When you hold Pickett and Lundy to a combined 21 pts it should be a win

Nice summary and have to agree that the loss is merely annoying at this point, and far from devastating. it would have been great if that last attempt had gone in to make it go into a second overtime but after the Maryland loss it is reassuring to be back to a single score loss with a level of play that bodes well for the final game and the Big Ten Tournament ahead.

Getting to overtime during the final regular season stretch has to be a positive when the Committee looks back on how Northwestern finished.

It is not a good sign that we may go 0-4 to end the regular season. They need something to get their mojo back.

This was the first game this year I was really frustrated we lost. Even the IL game I was not.

We had no business losing this game. It was dumb. We played terribly against a team that played terrible.
I think I sat on my couch for about an hour after this game without moving before going up to bed. Definitely the biggest gut punch loss of the season for sure.

Sure wish we could have tried playing some type of matchup zone on their perimeter players, and stick Big Matt in the lane. I realize that they weren't playing any bigs for him to match up with, but with Pickett backing down and kicking the entire second half, I wish we had seen some type of adjustment. We could also use Roper for some additional depth. Boo and Chase are starting to look fatigued, with tired legs. Lots of missed shots that they normally make...

This is key. Instead of Roper, we have Martinelli, who has just not been able to handle the bright lights at this point of the season. Obviously, no one had any expectations of him this year anyway, but still, he was brutal in the limited minutes against Illinois and PSU.

It’s not about handling bright lights for him. He flashed these problems all season. He’s a freshman and has been getting burned defensively. He makes a freshman mistake or two a game and doesn’t play within the flow of the offense. When he scored earlier in the season they were good moves but they weren’t in the flow. He flashed a lot of good things too but weight room and defense will be key in the off-season.

I’m bullish on Nick but there’s no substitute for game experience

NU is streaky. Not good, not bad, but streaky. NU can win, but whether or not they will seems dependent on the psychic messages they receive.

Plenty of season left to play well a few more times. Sure was exciting when they were winning.

I think so much of it is emotional/psychological, which is why we need to get off this schneid asap. Beating Rutgers would be an exhale. Lose that one, and I'm really nervous heading into BTT/NCAA.

Very annoying loss. And I agree that what was most annoying was every time the Cats stretched to a 5 or 6 point lead PSU would hit a 3. Every time.

Having said that, if the Cats somehow beat Rutgers they still have a good chance to get the double bye.

There are basically 7 teams vying for the last 3 double byes. If the Cats beat Rutgers they would be ahead of Rutgers and Indiana so it would be down to 5 teams vying for the last 3 double byes. NU, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan and Iowa.

In that case the whole round robin record comes in for teams that are tied with the same record. Very confusing.

So I guess you'd have to think about the chances of each team finishing 12-8 and go from there.

-Iowa has Nebraska at home so a good chance they end up 12-8
-Michigan has Illinois and Indiana on the road so not guaranteed they will win 1 of the 2 to get to 12-8
-Illinois has Michigan at home and Purdue on the road - Tough to win both of those to get to 12-8
-Maryland has their last game at PSU and as we've seen Maryland is not very good on the road and PSU can be very good at home if they are shooting lights out

Of course all of this is moot if NU loses at Rutgers and obviously that will be a tough game. If they lose they will be probably be in the 7-9 range with a tough Thursday game.

What's crazy is if the Cats beat Rutgers to end up 12-8 and Michigan loses to both Illinois and Indiana, the Cats get the double bye. Not matter what Illinois, Iowa and Maryland do in their last games.

If NU, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Maryland all end up 12-8 the Cats get the 4th seed based on head to head and round robin.

So to make it easy, obviously root for the Cats to beat Rutgers and Michigan to lose to both Indiana and Illinois which is very possible since both are on the road.
