I had a feeling his career would end like this. NU just released it.

Sorry to hear this. Feel bad for him, he was a very promising kid who had bad luck with his foot. I wish him all the best in life after football.

This has been known for quite a while, hasn't it? I thought everybody knew, to be honest...

I think everyone was assuming it and hinted at it, but it didn't become official until today.

By the way, Fitz had a funny comment about McEvilly. He's slimmed down quite a bit already and Fitz said he "looks awfully metrosexual now."

Agree. The timing of the announcement has me more concerned about whether Fitz & Co. could have made a decision about this far back enough to have done something else with the scholarship. I'm cool with these going to walk-ons, but this is what, the 3rd or 4th retirement announcement since signing day? I'm dead set against oversigning and stuff like that, but tighter scholarship management would be nice (realizing of course that I definitely don't know the whole story and the "final word" may not have been achievable in February).

Probably have to go through the proceedures to make sure everything is checked off. They might have a strong suspicion that this is the way things are going to go but they cannot say it until everyone agrees.

Regarding the scholarship management, it likely would have have been stretching to fill the positions last year.

He said during the press conference they really didn't know whether he would be able to play until a couple of weeks ago. I like that they respect the player and bend over backwards to allow him to try to rehab and play. Some schools would have thrown McEvilly overboard and I'm proud that NU didn't.

NU didn't "throw him overboard" because he was potentially useful if he recovered well enough to play. If he was a 3rd stringer, he wouldn't be at NU for a 6th year.

IMO, the latter is fine. NU provided 4 years of free education.

Football is a brutal sport and unfortunately these things happen. Best of luck to Sean, he's probably glad he came to NU, which does a great job preparing athletes for life after football.
