Bo Ryan retires effective immediately

That program will now be a spiral downward in the short term. We play them here and we should beat them.
I know that he had planned to retire at the end of the season, but have to wonder if he would have retired at this juncture if they had 0-2 losses at this point.

Replaying the presser now on BTN (the one I missed due to NJ Cat turning me on to that DePaul Stanford snoozefest).
It'll be Tony Bennett's job to turn down, followed by Ben Jacobsen. Bo did this to give Gard a chance, but there's no way he keeps the gig if one of those two show interest.
Ryan would never do that by himself. True Dick alvarez has obviously forced him out. the press conference showed that ryan wants nothing to do with the blockhead alvarez.
If this is true, it was actually a classy move. From ESPN:
"Ryan said that part of the reason he came back for this season was to give Gard time to be with his father, Glen, who was diagnosed with cancer in the spring and passed away this fall. Ryan said the demands on Gard's time to fly around the country meeting with doctors and helping his dad put his retirement on the back burner. Following Glen Gard's death, Ryan then spoke with Alvarez and decided the semester break would be a good time to step down."
I don't think so. Everyone knew he was soon to retire. This was a rebuilding year in the first place and they are not as good as the last couple years. There is no disgrace here, he will keep in touch with his guys at an appropriate level and they promotion of the assistant coach will keep continuity.
I'll give Ryan the benefit of the doubt. He's always seemed like a good guy. Let's take his retirement at face value and salute his spectacular career rather than speculating on dastardly motives. Wisconsin and the B1G will miss him.
Not what Mike Greenberg was doing on Mike&Mike this morning. He "Can't Stand" this news. Unless Ryan has some undisclosed health problem, Greeny thought it was Ryan trying to force UW's hand into hiring his guy. The press conference from Ryan makes it sound like he's less than thrilled with things too, but didn't get the entire context.
He wanted to retire at the end of last year. If he had, someone else would have been hired. Same at the end of this year. He wanted to give Guard a chance and by doing it this way he gives Guard that chance.
Players don't choose schools for assistant coaches, something a lot of people pointed out when we hired Collins. Regardless of whether he's trying to set up a loyal assistant, Bo has a responsibility to his players and the university to finish the job.
Eh- so he took all but the freshmen out of those players to a national championship game last year. I think they're probably okay with it. And it's not exactly like he left the program in a bad spot for them going forward. They have young talent, a vibrant program, have gone to (insert numbers of Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4), and won X B1G championships, plus consistently sell out a big stadium that's a very intimidating home court and strong fanbase.
If you asked the players, I'm pretty sure they'd take the deal all in, and will manage to tolerate the gross indignity of playing part of a season with an assistant that by all accounts is smart and well-liked. I don't think Bo even expects him to get hired really. I think he's just getting a reward of being a loyal long-term assistant to get a chance to coach for one season. And it also gives the AD the chance to take his time with the transition and have a head start on all the other teams that will eventually be looking for coaches too. Of all the coaches to get angry at for doing things the wrong way, Bo is not high on the list.
He said at the end of last season that he was looking to retire. He probably would have earlier if Guard's father had not had health problems. He was just done and his heart was no longer in it. He tried to do right by everyone concerned, but in the end, he was ready for the next step in his life.
It also gives Guard a nice exit package and a chance to show his skills so he can land another gig.
The always hilarious Nigel Hayes has a great take on it:

Multiple websites and Deadspin are reviving this story with some new gossip. It does seem odd that Ryan would have two attorneys with him to meet with Barry and his posse.
There are some wonderfully salacious rumors in the comments of the Deadspin article. Oh my.
At the very least bringing along two attorneys to a meeting with your boss suggests a lack of trust. For his part, Alvarez brought along his deputy AD, who was a law professor for 35 years. It's not a matter of a buyout or a termination, so why? On the other hand, Big Ten sports are big boy business and you don't want to be burned on a contract.
Still fishy.
