Over the years, I remember some people moaning about NU not being on an all-sports station like WSCR. So after DePaul actually culminated a dramatic comeback from being seven down in the final two minutes vs. Providence, you'd think at least their newscaster would mention it, maybe even play a highlight of Garrett's game winning three point play, but NOT even the score was given. So much for the value of being on an all-sports station. It's pretty much always Bulls, Bears,Cubs, Sox and Hawks on WSCR, whereas the Cats get some nice pub on some of the WGN shows. I remember hearing Fitz with a talkback with one of their broadcasters before the Pinstripe Bowl game, and Eanet often does the sports news on the station and always provides Cats news. In other words, I really like our broadcast situation.

Thats all true, but personally unless there is an NU or Hawks game on I never even bother with WGN, whereas I do listen to WSCR and WMVP until it gets too annoying to listen to (Bernstein). Since the Cubs and Kaplan left I would be surprised if many casual sports fans listen to WGN. Chicago is a pro sports town, I don't care what station you are on or even how good the team is, they will talk about the Bears third string QB instead of local college sports.

Of course having the CUBS leave has been a benefit as we have far less FB games displaced. Still do have BB games displaced by the hawks.

When the Cats make the NCAA tournament, this will be the least of our worries. It'll be similar to when the Cats went to the Rose Bowl in that magical 1995-6 season.

Isn't just making the tournament comparable to the motor city bowl or pinstripe bowl? NU would need to go to the final four to be on the level of the rose bowl. I really don't think Chicago will care if NU just makes the tournament,

I don't think so. Given the notoriety NU has received for being the only major conference school to have never been to the tourney, I think it becomes a huge PR opportunity. I agree it isn't at the level of making the second ever trip to the Rose bowl, but at least up there with making a New Years 6 bowl game.

Many at the Score actively denounce college athletics. And over the years, it's pretty obvious that idea has taken root as part of its culture.

Of course, they suddenly wake up and toss their laughable attempt at morality aside when Alabama and Clemson put on a hell of a show.

But let's spend another eight hours on the soap opera of Rondo, Hoiberg, Gar, Pax and a going-nowhere Bulls team.

I know the sports talk stations aren't supposed to be journalists - at least that's what they will tell you. But I wish they wouldn't program their station down to every single ratings point (and generally the lowest common denominator). Are we going to ignore the Hawks because they get horrible ratings? It's headed in that direction.

Just a tad more "journalistic" approach would give them a wider variety of options over time including college basketball.

OTOH, whats-left-of-the-"print media" is headed in the same direction.

As far as listening on line goes, WGN is head and shoulders above the rest. I'm in an in between housing situation so I don't have Direct TV or anything right now. I have tried to listen to the Broncos to see how TS is doing and the other night I tried to listen to ESPN because the Cats BB game was preempted by hockey on WGN. The internet is clear and dependable and easy to sign on to on WGN but ESPN was just a nightmare of cutting in and out repeating whole sections of broadcast every two minutes. And finding the Broncos on line was really difficult to sign onto.

I agree with Fitz-worshipping Fitzphile on this. Any other decent Big 10 team that makes the tournament would not be headline news. I guarantee that if NU makes the tournament for the first time ever, it will be front page news and talked about on every radio show and every other media outlet in the greater Chicago area. It will be national news, on the front page of ESPN. Chris Collins will be a rock star. Trump might even tweet something about it.

Depends how we do it. If we get in as a bubble team and something like an 11 seed, people will talk about it for a day or two and then the only story will be about how the games go. If we roar through the Big Ten, challenge for the title, and get a high seed, the media attention will start in February and not stop until the tournament run is over.

1995 would not have been a phenomenon if the team had gone 6-5 and earned a berth in the Independence Bowl. Thousands of people in Chicago are not going to start buying NU gear because we're playing an opening round game in Dayton.

First NCAA berth would likely get some very good media attention nationally and locally for the first week of the tournament. But Nu's run to the Rose Bowl, starting with the stunning win at Notre Dame, was huge news for the entire autumn of '95 both locally (even on Sportsradio) and nationally. That one season gave Northwestern football lasting credibility in Chicago(for those who complain about our attendance, I think we're well above 20,000 season tickets now, whereas I think we were UNDER 5,000 when '95 began) . The basketball team would at least need to get to through the first and second rounds to come close to matching it, but I'll settle for just getting into the field!
