Chris Collins COY

Don't watch all his press conferences. Not trying to be negative. Does he ever mention Lowery?

I don’t think there’s an award for assistants. It’s much easier to award football coaches, because roles are so defined.

Here’s a list. Doesn’t appear to be an assistant-targeted role.

He’s mentioned him several times in different interviews. He knows how much that addition to the staff meant and he hasn’t been shy giving him credit.

Kudos to Battle and McIntosh as well. Can’t overlook their contributions as they have certainly been a positive influence on Boo and others. Also keeping BJ in an analyst role also enhanced our staff. CCC made all the right staff moves.

So if my quick Google research is correct, even if we lost out we would have the highest conference win% since 1945-46. I’m not sure if B1G tournament games are calculated into conf record? If so and depending on the next couple regular season games it could be the highest conf win% in 90 years. That should be strong consideration for national COY.

Don't see how Painter gets the nod over CC and am hard pressed to come up w/ anyone who has a clearly better resume than what CC will have.

CC will be getting at least a 3 yr extension, and while that likely includes a nice raise, if I were CC, I'd ask for more $$ for the coaching staff.

The changes CC made to the staff has made all the difference (hopefully, it'll also work out for Fitz) and want to keep this group intact and around for as long as possible.

It's expensive to raise a family in and around the Northshore (a lot more than in podunk college towns); the assistants usually aren't lucky to live 5-8 minutes away like CC and Fitz.

Painter should not as what Purdue has done was expected going into the season. But NU was picked 13/14 and has far exceeded anything that was expected. The only coach that is even close would likely be Hoiberg as he has led the team to a pretty remarkable turnaround over the last couple weeks, especially considering all the injuries. But probably too little too late

Actually, what Purdue has done was not expected. They were unranked coming into the season and remained unranked for a couple of weeks. They won the Phil Knight Classic, Thanksgiving weekend, soundly defeating West Virginia, Gonzaga, and Duke over the course of four days. They also defeated Marquette a week earlier. It raised a few eyebrows. Going from unranked to number 1 for 7 weeks thus far is no mean feat in my book. Two very good coaches on the verge of having great years!

Yeah, I think Painter still has a decent shot to win the award, depending on what happens the next few weeks, but you have to think Collins has a nice lead right now.

Conference postseason play is not included in conference season records.

As far as I know that rule applies to pretty much every college sport.

Postseason games are counted in overall records but not conference season records as a bookkeeping matter (and several sports do give awards for regular season achievements).

So effectively, postseason play counts like extra non-conference games.

My personal gut feeling is that B1G COY is close to a lock. There are scenarios where Painter could win it. Or even Rutgers going undefeated the rest of the season while we lose 5 in a row. But it's unlikely. 90% chance CC gets it.

Nationally there's more volatility and scenarios of course. But there's a strong chance he will be in the conversation and that is remarkable. Others that come to mind:
1) Jeff Cappel
2) Jerome Tang
3) Randy Bennet
4) Buzz Williams
5) Ron Hunter

I'm sure there's more right now and others that can come into the picture with strong finishes.

Purdue was not picked to win the conference, they were picked between 5th-7th depending on the outlet. If Collins gets a share of the reg season title I think he's a lock, otherwise it'll be a pretty close race. Painter's relied on getting 2 freshmen starters up to speed while NW has a lot of experience on their team. You can make a case for either. Hoiberg isn't in the convo, it's down to Collins & Painter.

I wonder to what extent B Mac being on the sidelines has helped Buie reach his mental potential. With the greatest player in Northwestern basketball history, our warrior, plays every minute, clutch, game-finishing, tourney-leading PG on the sidelines, Boo Buie has smoothed the edges off his game, taking a huge mental step, and turned into... a warrior, plays every minute, clutch, game-finish, tourney-leading PG.

Maybe it's just the natural course of things... but maybe there's a connection here.

I’ve said it before, but McIntosh’s senior year was a waste and a flop, with rumors of a Lindsey/Mc schism that they never worked through. I wonder how much Mc being in Boo’s ear and Audige’s ear has changed them from competitors for shots to complements in scoring.

Boo talked about it in the press conference that both BMac and his brother watch film with him and help him see things on the court he misses. I'm sure this has been a huge help!

True, his brother also obviously a similar player and likely a big impact.

And, even as we rightfully credit Lowery or McIntosh and Battle did their roles, as we hear from Paddy Fitz so often, ultimately, everything on the court, that’s on Collins.

And the way this team has grown, especially during the season, has been remarkable.

Boo’s growth from solid to star. Nicholson’s from nervous puppy to Beard of Stone. Barnhizer’s from rotation guy to leader off the bench.

It’s undeniable that what CCC has done — aided by his staff — has worked. It’s remarkable. He’s grown as a coach. He’s been awesome.

This is more fun than either of the football championship seasons — in those cases, NU has always benefited from competing in the Big Ten Worst.

This season, I just wish NU got the chance to take down Purdue on the road.

I never thought this was possible.

Collins is only exceeding expectations that he himself set with terrible coaching the last six years. Give me a break he’s not winning CoY. It’s Painter no question.
