I went to follow him on Twitter & Instagram after the win in Madison…and unless I’m missing something, I don’t think he has any public presence. What do we think of that? I see advantages and disadvantages on each side of this.

Thought big time coaches just delegated dealing with that stuff to staff. They run something by him/her to publish and he/she blesses it. Nothing personal, etc.

Or...with all due respect to him...it signals that he has no experience ever needing to use social media as a competitive recruiting tool...because youngsters today don't use the TikTok or anything.

Does it? I think it's all overrated now. IMO HC's don't need to be posting about anything anymore. Players maybe but unless HC's want the social media deals that comes with lots of followers (see Coach Prime).

It kind of makes me like him even more. #removethetagorremovetheAD

I think this is sorta like saying a head coach doesn't need to do press conferences because it's all fluff anyway and the media will cover the team regardless.

The presence of a coach in social media space does not say much, but the absence of it does.

As I've said elsewhere, I like Braun a lot and hope he puts the head coaching job on ice, but I also don't like how so many fans seem to be content explaining away things that we'll kick ourselves for a year or two from now if we hire Braun and he's a terrible recruiter, can't rep the program like a head coach does as a politician, etc. - let's just be willing to look at these things with scrutiny now rather than regret them later.

I mean, yes…Braun now has slightly less than one season of experience as a head coach. But he isn’t Gerry Faust. Braun has years of experience as a position coach and coordinator at the college level. Acting like he is a neophyte to recruiting seems like a bit much.

Is the Big Ten a step up in difficulty? Sure. But he has excelled at his other duties, so I’m not particularly worried about his ability to handle other aspects of the HC position.

Honestly, if the players really like him, they will sell the program to recruits for him. All he has to do is get guys to visit, and offer early…the NU way.

Sounds easy!

C’mon…I know you are annoyed with me, but you surely know that isn’t what I meant.

Your post about the difficulty of the NU job was spot on, the other day.

Nothing ever comes easy for this program. I’m simply optimistic that Braun can follow the same path to success NU has used before. And, yes, having the players like you (an attribute Fitz shared) is extremely helpful.

I wonder how complimentary Kevin Wilson’s players are about him to recruits over at TU?

I am not annoyed with you at all. My point that I believe you agree with, is it is much more difficult to do this at a place like NU.where you are battling internal factors within the school administration. The Cats against the world approach has a shelf life of one year.

This.

Braun has been a DC on a National Championship team, facing far more scrutiny than he ever will at NU. He is no neophyte.

Could not agree more. Fitz said for years that our players are our best recruiters. I can't imagine a prospective safety would not be impressed by an opportunity to hang out with Coco Azema, who absolutely loves David Braun. Same goes for Jaheem Joseph and Devin Turner. How about a wide receiver having the same opportunity with Kirtz, Johnson and Henning. I could go on and on. These guys are big time Power 5 football players who have done it over and over in live action. I'm not worried about recruiting going forward.

Isn't what is needed now (hopefully) is to hire some great coordinators to help buttress the things where he is more inexperienced? Isn't that what it is with ALL coaches? At all leagues and levels? The one thing he doesn't have is experience in putting together coaching staffs and making great hires.

It isn't a red flag or any color flag that he doesn't have a social media presence. It might have been important a couple of years ago but it feels less so now. Other members of the staff maybe Fitz would tweet about Chicago sports. That's about it.

If it is in recruiting, what I have seen in the past is a new system works for a while and then it gets too popular and then its effectiveness goes down and pretty fast. First it was ads in papers, then monster then linked in then indeed. Then spiders It goes on and on and people get hit with so many attempted contacts that they get overloaded and just shut down. Keeps getting back to old school. Individual contacts and referrals.

Think of it yourself., Emails used to be good but now you get hundreds a day. Same with texts. These become overwhelming and then stop being effective
