Collins a Finalist

No. His Pop was a semi-finalist. Strange that Collins wasn't Big 10 COTY but is a Finalist for NCOTY.

Pitino was rewarded for turning around an 8 win team in a year. No problem with that. Collins is more of an award for four years of work versus one so it will be interesting since NU won 20 games last year.

But we all "know" it was a "soft" 20 wins a year ago.....;)

I think Collins deserves this award. Was Minny's Pitino not a finalist? Just curious.
Correct! Though I do think that within the conference, Pitino is a solid choice. Nationally, The Wildcat's making the Big Dance is very hard top!

Cheers!

You can argue that having the "soft" schedule to get easy wins to get to NIT that did not work out is one of the few things Collins has done wrong in the last four years.

Yup. I learned a lot about strength of schedule last year.

And yet, if you look at THIS YEAR, that NU team would have comfortably made the NIT because most all the regular season champs in the 1-bid leagues won. Last year, NU was a bit unlucky with that and that they had three wins against sub-200 Big Ten teams which could not have been possible this year.

If it helps with recruiting I hope he wins.

Whether it's deserved or not.
You must be on drugs. What Collins has accomplished in just 4 season is amazing. And he did it without JUCOs or transfers. Just recruiting his guys and developing them into a top half Big 10 team. And winning the first ever NCAA game, getting that monkey off their back in game 1.

Collins has by FAR the best resume of the 4 finalists. Would any of the other three trade places with him?

Not.

Obviously, he never would have been nominated without Bill Carmody.

I know that this post was in jest but why are there still so many posts about the previous coach?

When Joe Maddon got the Cubs into the playoffs in 2015 and won the WS in 2016, I didn't hear that many people talking about Rick Renteria. Talk about a manager getting screwed over.

Same with Denis Savard when Coach Q. got the Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup in 2010. Savard had a young team and did pretty well in 2007. Got fired after only 4 games in 2008.

Because there weren't loud contingents of Cubs and Hawks fans who thought Renteria and Savard were amazing.

For Naismith National COTY. I think he is a lock.

"The group of finalists also includes Mark Few of Gonzaga, Villanova's Jay Wright and Bill Self of Kansas."

I would prob vote Few 1 and Collins 2 personally of that group. What Mark has done with taking a very disparate group of players and making them into an incredibly cohesive group is impressive. But I hope Chris gets it! Would not hurt recruiting, as someone else suggested below.

Very nice. More wonderful publicity for Northwestern. Hope he wins the award.

and, Go Cats !!

CC cleaned the Augean Stables. None of the other finalists had to face anything like the problems that CC faced.

I disagree with the gopher and the conference in the selection of Pitino for the same reason, and they know the problems CC faced.

Here's hoping CC wins this and gets the recognition he deserves.

Voted for CC.

I don't see how there can be any other choice. Few has had his team in the NCAA forever and this is the first time he has made the Final 4. Collins did what no other human has accomplished. Heck, even Bill Carmody got every other school he coached into the Big Dance!!

I'll be honest and say that I don't even think it's very close between Few and Collins. With Gonzaga finally making the final 4 I think he takes it in a runaway. What Few has done over multiple years to build that program up to prominence and maintain it, in an NCAA that is so incredibly skewed against mid majors, is pretty much impossible. Notice that no other team of the other 275 non high majors has done anything of the sort. And then not only maintain, but continue setting the bar higher, with almost no steps back.

And then this year assembling a group of role players, transfers, etc - that most thought were building blocks for next year's squad - into the best team in the country? Chris did all of that over the last 4 years... and built a team good enough to be about #30 in the country this year. He's top 3, and maybe #1. And Gonzaga backing it up against the pressure to finally make the final 4.... if Chris wins it would be a case of the NU media mafia story overriding a much better candidate.

But being NU has worked against us in the past, so if it works in our favor this time I'd take it and celebrate very happily.

For the record, I still voted for CC in the online poll :)
