I could be wrong but it appeared that CC stuck with man defense. Putting law or sanjay on trimble who absolutely destroyed them. Neither could defend him.
Otherwise i think CC has done an incredible job this year coaching, and developing.

Considering that Maryland's scoring attack had been fairly balanced coming in, and Trimble had been in a terrible slump, I thought that NOT doubling was the right way to go. Unfortunately, it didn't work out, since Melo reverted to being his stellar self...

In conference play, the Cats have averaged 32% from 3 and 76% from the FT line. Against Wisconsin both percentages were better.

Yesterday, they shot 22% from 3 and 56% from the FT line.

To reach just a tad below their averages, they needed two more 3s and five more FTs. That's not ridiculous production for this group.

It just didn'the happen. The Cats defense wasn't the greatest but Trimble was tearing it up. There were at least three jumpers were nobody would have defended it better ... swish!!

And the offense was ... just not there.

Trimble came into last night's game a career .388 FG shooter and .318 3-point shooter in Big 10 play over 48 games. Obviously you have to pay attention to him, but he'd never played a game in his career like he did last night.

Incidentally, he's taken 17 or more shots in a conference game 6 times, and 3 of them are against NU (he was 8 for 18 in each of the other 2 games).

Law and Lumpkin are considered the two best defenders on this squad. Who would you have chosen? Also switching to a zone would have only Trimble more time to launch his 3s.

Headlines like this will get you banned Wicker!
Not a peep after the beating the first place B1G team without our leading scorer. Here's hoping we don't hear from you the rest of the season. That should mean that the team won the national championship.

Two reasons why zone would have been bad: We haven't played it all this year, and we didn't need the rest of Maryland's team to start hitting 3s. Trimble was awesome yesterday, but we could have won the game with Lindsey on the floor.

Hey guys, Terps fan here. Just wanted to pop in to say good game and congrats on the season you guys are having. I think I speak for the rest of the Big Ten (heck, the country) when I say that I hope to see your name called on Selection Sunday.

From my perspective, I felt pretty confident going into the game simply because you guys had just won at Wisconsin. Teams always seem to play great at home when they're desperate, and lucky for us you guys weren't in that boat yesterday. McIntosh getting in early foul trouble kind of put the game out of reach early imo, though I thought you guys should have ran the offense through Pardon more. He was very good on the pick and roll but didn't get a ton of touches.

And yeah, Melo was the man last night. There'd been a ton of chatter about his shot being off and what not all week, and that was quite the way to respond. Best I've seen him in his three years so far.

Good luck the rest of the way!

The other problem for me last night was how BMac handled being double-teamed at the top of the key.

Pardon's slide to the basket was open all night after the double-team. They took advantage of it serveral times, but I would have beaten that horse until Maryland adjusted. There were several more baskets available.

I can't blame Collins for last night. Law has been shutting down some of the best players in the league all year. He couldn't stop one of them last night because Trimble was unconscious. Rough night because the guy was white hot. It happens.

What shouldnt happen, however, is all these personal atracks against other NU fans. I'm not sure what they accomplish and I'm certain most of the things said here are not things anybody here would say to another NU fan in person. I wish that people here would exhibit a little more self control in that regard.

Credit Law for taking responsibility after the game. I watched that press conference and felt bad for the next few guys playing against him.

After your comment, i can see why CC played man with otherwise dependable defenders.

Sounds alot like what are fans were saying about macintosh not having his shot then he goes on a tear avg 22 pts a game and finishing the tear against wisconsin.
Credit your coach for forcing someone other than macintosh to beat them.

Okay, so you are criticizing the coaching decisions but offering no alternative solutions. That's not constructive. Let's be honest, Chris Collins has been immersed in the world of basketball since the cradle. He has learned the game from some of the greatest basketball minds out there. His defensive game plans have completely shut down Ethan Happ and Peter Jok, big ten player of the year candidates.

I don't know what we could have done differently. A zone wouldn't have worked because Maryland was draining 3's. You do realize that Vic Law and Sanjay Lumpkin are probably our two best defenders, right? I would still keep them on Melo if we played them again. The only thing I think we maaaayyyybbbeee could have done was put Isaiah Brown on Melo a bit more. We did late in the game with some success as he could match Melo's quickness. However, with Melo having the greatest game of his career and hitting every legit 3 pointer he shot (hail Mary's don't count), we weren't going to win no matter what we did. We can't win a high scoring shootout against Maryland without Scottie Lindsey

We have played zone a couple times this season for short spurts. I want to say we did it last against Nebraska or Rutgers. However, your point is well taken. We have some elite athletes on this team and you want to play man to take advantage

Tremble had a career high of 32 point and accounted for 38 points when you factor in his assists or half of Under Armour U's production. Also, I think a big factor was no. 1 Cowen flopping like a fish when McIntosh barely laid a finger on him. Did anyone else notice McIntosh had 2 fouls on him two and a half minutes into the first half and then out offense was disorganized and disjointed. That was Under Armour U's no. 1 goal and their bench erupted like they won they game when the blind ref called McIntosh for his second foul. McIntosh has to be prepared for this and not pick up ticky tack reach in fouls. Turgeon was flailing around when NFL football ref Gene Staratore fell for Cowen's acting like the Turtles had made it to the Final 4 which is not going to happen.

I would like Collins play Benson more than 0-3 minutes considering our bench is thin.

Trimble is a great college player, but what will be interesting will be to see if he makes it in the pros based on his poor shooting. One mock draft that I saw did not have him drafted and another one had him at no. 40 which means his NBA future is questionable.

Except for the first 6 minutes of the 2nd half (they scored 19 minutes in that span), I thought we played pretty good defense. We had a few breakdowns for layups, but Melo just went nuts hitting tough shots. They also banked in a 3 in the early parts of the game. They had 32 points at half. The problem was our offense sucked.

Collins did what he could to set the team up for success. I don't think we have a guy with the speed and agility to shut Trimble down, especially in an offense designed to get him open shots.

Offensively, we were getting enough open looks and drawing enough fouls to have won the game, but the shots have to fall.

IN general, BMac doesn't usually even pick up his first foul till the second half. Most I can recall him having in first half this year is one. And don't forget the BS O foul that was called to give him 3 in first half (or are we talking the same one.).

Coaches can and do have to adjust because something isnt working. Law was a fail then sanjay. Yes, both are good but i felt coach was too slow to put brown on him.
Mostly, credit to melo regardless of collins but putting brown on melo alot earlier would have seemed a reasonable move.
