Collins in Chicago Magazine

Thanks to Coach K for encouraging him, not discouraging him, to take the NU job.
Great quote:

A conversation with Coach K proved the clincher. Recalls Collins: “He just told me, ‘If I was your age, I’d be all over this. I’m telling you, they’ve just been waiting for the right guy.’ That gave me a lot of confidence.”

Wow, a lot of ink on something that doesn't reveal much (if any) new information. I've heard almost all those quotes before.

Still, if it gets even just a small number of Chicagoland residents interested in the Cats, it's totally worth it.

Funny that one of the featured photos is of Tino with the ball.

Maybe similar content, but a very different audience. Chicago Magazine is where Chicago's Big Ten Team should be. This is great PR for the program.

Could this be the second coolest magazine cover in NU sports history behind "The Real Deal"?

“If you want to succeed, one, you better be resilient and, two, you better have grit.” Doug Collins

4 stars.

I actually think the piece is significant.

I'd argue that Chicago Magazine (now Tribune Media - owned, I believe) would not dedicate similar space to any other college sports coach in the area/state. For those of us who have read Chicago magazine since John Fink was editor back in the 80's, it's hard to imagine any of the state teams getting this coverage or the local private school teams. (I'm easily disproven with an example that contradicts this)

I think it's good for expanding the fan base. Frankly, there are a lot of NU alums who live in the area and did not get pulled in last year because they don't regularly follow sports.

Not sure this does a whole lot for recruiting, but you'd rather have it than not have it.

So, good get by the NU Sports information staff.

I don't have an example to hand, but I doubt the magazine would just ignore, say, DePaul if a charismatic young coach with an interesting story arrived and brought them back to Final Four level. But I agree that I can't see them doing something like this for any team outside of the city or close suburbs.

Are you saying just this magazine? Because I don't think any NU fan who lived through March 2005 would deny that Chicago embraces a winning Illini basketball team just fine...

Yes, when I said "this magazine" I was in fact referring to this magazine. Obviously Chicago as a whole would embrace a winning Illinois team.
