Collins on the Cats

Interesting tidbit..... Vic Law has been working on bringing the ball up in case Bryant is out or getting pressured. Scottie Pippen II.

I hope not. I expect a lot more out of Vic Law than to choke in the clutch and be a little baby when the coach gives the last shot to a player that would actually make it.

I would be delighted if Vic Law turns into one of the 50 greatest basketball players of all time. You could hold his worst moment as a player against him 20 years from now while I'll remember him leading us to the final four.

I don't get the Scottie Pippen hate either. He was a great player on a winning team. What is not to like? I guess you can debate whether he is overrated. But to argue he wasn't a better than average player is kind of silly.

But to not derail this thread further, I like the fact that Collins is showing confidence in Vic's ball handling ability. If he has indeed improved his handle and added that muscle, he could be a force. He has great athletic ability and his shot was coming around at the end of last year. Watch out!

I would be delighted too if Vic Law was in the top 50. Thing is Pippen isn't in the top 50. He might have gotten a trophy or was voted in but that doesn't mean he deserved it. James Harrison should make him return the award

...but Pippen was good enough to make an enjoyable difference in the Bulls' legacy. Why the hate, Shakes?

I would be delighted if Law were in the top 50 of current college BB players.

This is beyond silly. You are the Donald Trump of the board on this topic. Just keeping saying something over and over without any facts to support your position and eventually some portion of the population accepts it as truth. For those who haven't participated in the trail of posts on this topic, allow me to summarize your position. Scottie Pippen was overrated because you say so. And you say so based on your recollections as a 10 year old kid watching the Bulls and your belief that you can only be a great basketball player if you are a great scorer. Let's just focus on NU. If Vic Law is a first-team all conference defensive team selection and averages 20 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks a game (pro-rated for a 40 minute game), we will make the tournament. If he needs to defer to Demps or McIntosh at the end of games, I can live with that.

Ruined a thread, shakes. Stop it.

No Dennis Rodman was a great player and he couldn't score... Unless we're talking about scoring with Madonna and Carmen Electra. Pippen was a solid defender but not the defender that Jordan was who is the greatest on ball defender to ever play the game. Pippen tried to take credit saying he always covered the opponents best player. This was based on the finals against the lakers where he switched to magic for about 5 quarters the entire series. Offensively, Pippen benefited by playing next to Jordan who made winners out of guys like Craig Hodges, Luc Longley, and Scott Williams.

But I will backtrack and apologize to Mr Pippen. He was an slightly above average NBA player. If Vic Law turns into that, I would be extremely happy.

Yes. Jordan was the greatest on ball defender because you have certainly seen them all and I am sure have given this careful consideration, as you do with all of your pronouncements. How old were you again when the Bulls won their first championship? You keep avoiding the question. Do you have a library of NBA games that you review to reach these conclusions or do you just watch Jordan highlight videos?

Pippen was definitely one of the greatest perimeter help defenders of all time, which benefited Jordan when he wanted to gamble on steals. And Jordan benefited overall from playing with Pippen instead of Orlando Woolridge and the other guys he played with before Pippen got there when he won one playoff game in 3 seasons. And when Jordan was gone in 1993, Pippen averaged 22 points on 49% shooting, 8.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 3 steals and one block. He was first team All-NBA, first team All-Defensive Team (Rodman was on the second team that year) and finished 3rd in the MVP voting. I am pretty sure Hodges, Longley and Williams didn't quite put up those numbers without Jordan. He is also in the top 25-40 players of all time when you look at advanced statistics (see Basketball-Reference). Jordan also picked him on his all-time pick-up team and said he was the best small forward on the Dream Team. But you know best. He had a migraine and sat out the last shot against the Knicks. He made you mad when you were 10 years old. That defines his career.

Pippen was better than above average. But, I also believe he was overrated. Look at what he was unable to do when he was paired with Drexler and Olajuwon on the Rockets. Jordan was a huge difference.

Of course he doesn't win 6 titles without Jordan and he would probably be viewed now as an underappreciated player. Advanced stats don't suggest he was overrated at all.

And Drexler was gone by the time Pippen joined Houston and Barkley and Olajuwon (and Pippen for that matter) were in decline. Houston finished 31-19 the year Pippen played and 34-48 the year after he left, so it wasn't exactly a dream team any more. In his first year with Portland, they won 59 games and he led them to the Western Conference finals. They blew a 15 point 4th quarter lead in game 7 against Shaq and Kobe (and I agree that Jordan wouldn't let that happen). More than anything, that probably affected his legacy because if he had won a 7th title, he would probably be viewed differently. Last post on this because the rest of the board is going to revolt. Go Cats.

No. It is an outstanding interview! He really is a great communicator.

And boy, is he pumped about palying UNC.......
Collins is sure a breath of fresh air at NU. Curious if he closes all practices to the press, Lou? He does have a open scrimmage, usually on a football game day and guess what, it's open to everyone!
