A list of the candidates is here:

He beat out some pretty successful 2022-23 coaches.

Terrific accomplishment!

Congrats to CCC!

Still a number of national COY awards still to be awarded: Head Coach Awards
2 for Smart so far, 1 for Terry, 1 for Collins (my unofficial count)
And I think Collins got shafted by the Naismith selecting Painter as a finalist over him...

I assume these votes are submitted before the tournament.

The announcement of the Naismith COY finalists came out on March 20, after Purdue's loss to FDU on March 17. But you're probably correct, the votes were likely submitted before that, so they didn't take into account that they would fall to a 16 seed.

Should be a nice talking point with those portaling.

My instinct, with very limited exposure to other conferences, for coaching of the year awards this year was, in order:

1) Jerome Tang
2) Shaka Smart
3) Dusty May
4) CC
5) Dennis Gates

Probably not remembering worthy names but Painter could go pound sand while singing choo choo

Collins has also won the JimStarr777 COY award, so you can put him at 2. It’s not as prestigious as Jim Phelan, but nothing is.

Your top 3 make sense.

Capel at Pitt turned an 11-21 (6-14) last place team into a 24-12 (14-6) ACC contender, then made it to the final 32 in the NCAA. His roster was not very good. He did a great job turning that team around - even kicked a guy off the team - despite the lack of depth.
