Cormac Ryan to Stanford

Strange that Collins couldn't sell him as a true #1 PG.

"Stanford recruited Ryan as a point guard, his preferred position, while others saw him as more of a combo guard or even putting him off the ball. The Cardinal has put together a top-10 recruiting class in 2018, a group Ryan believes he can develop with. The only thing missing from it was a point guard.

“They have designs for me to play the one,” he said."

Cats have swung for the fences in 2017 and 2018 and so far aren't hitting for much average.

Just one miss in 2018 is not enough of a basis to make a conclusion.

Teddy Greenstein was premature on his reporting and overhyped this kid's chances of going to NU. Not unusual that TGreenstein is off on his predictions or analysis. He once claimed that Joe Paterno had no knowledge of what Sandusky was doing to kids. Ooops.

He also fell for the Carmody myths that NU can't recruit because of the facilities. When we have found out that BC hated to and did not recruit. Collins in four years of recruiting he has turned all of these recruiting myths into the garbage that they were.

Will there be misses? Yes. But Collins is not settling and he has two freshman in Gaines and RS Ivaunauskas who will fill major roles and he recruited a 6'7" former 4-star wing in AJ Turner who they will develop this year. Not too shabby. 2 4-star players and a high 3-star that Jon Rothstein has said has skills.

Yes, a number of kids in the 2017 class chose to go elsewhere because of a number of reasons, but I have a feeling that a number of schools pushed the idea in recruiting that do you want to play in the NCAA tournament and NU has never made the tourney. Other schools could play that card. Creating a history and a legacy takes special kids and special coach and a special administration. I think the pieces are in place.

I'd really like to see the Cats get one of these guys early. I think the pied piper is important in any program is trying to establish an upward trend. Getting one of these guys who can sell at camps and tournaments is like having another recruiter.

Milton Academy kids are programmed to aim for Harvard or Ivies, and Stanford. NU is not quite viewed at that level (yet). It'll take a few more years of sustained success before we can get our basketball imagine up to the elite level. Coach Collins will get us there but we have to stay patient.

Hopefully. We need to win some of these battles. Hopefully Nance will be the first

This cracks me up. My sister would love it if her boys who are graduating Milton next week had aimed for the Ivies. Her daughter - a Milton grad - will get her lowly NU diploma next week.

I'm trying to remain optimistic, but have to admit I'm confused about the recruiting trend for 17 carrying into 18 class. I recall that Rap said when he committed that he felt he was the clear #1 priority for CCC. Was it the same story for Falzon? Is it possible CCC and staff are casting too wide a net right now and not making it clear who their #1 guy is? Just spitballing here...

I am having trouble following you...NU is not an elite level basketball program but Stanford and the Ivies are???
Stanford and SOME Ivies can be fairly ranked VERY marginally higher than NU in academics...only VERY marginally because the difference between schools in the top 15 or so is extremely small (compared to the thousands NOT in the top 15). Basketballwise, NU should be higher than all ivies, and not significantly below Stanford (if at all)...I mean currently...historically Stanford has done better.

@lou v, curious as to what your thoughts are regarding offering more (presumably lower ranked) kids since you say we were "all in" on Cormac. Or is there confidence that we could land Lathon or Ayo, or even that Isiah Brown is good enough to fill Bmac's void?

It is frustrating. We made to the NCAA's for the first time. Players improve each year under the tutelage of the coaches and I do not see how some of these players are not enamored with this as well as a world class education. To boot NU is probably in the second best conference outside of the ACC. This is befuddling to me

What's also interesting is that the PAC 12 or 14 has been getting only four or five teams in the tourney each year while the Big 10 has been getting 7 teams each year for the past number of years. UofA, Oregon, UCLA look like they are in the tourney every year. USC is an up and coming team with a very talented coach and will be a top 15 team this season so that leaves Stanford fighting for one spot with California and ASU with Bobby Hurley. My point is that it is not a given that Stanford will be in the tourney in Ryan's years at Stanford. Oh well, the whims of a 18-19 year old are tough to figure out. Good luck to him. On to the next prospect.

This recruit's process has been particularly private. It shouldn't be seen as a big surprise that he went elsewhere. Last I read, Stanford was in the lead.

Right. Can you knock a kid for choosing Stanford?

Second question, why do NU fans choose to characterize recruiting in terms that indicate failure? NU has the deepest, most talented roster since the 1960's. Is it possible to fail at recruiting while simultaneously building a deep and competitive roster?

Jeesh, give the coaches a break people.

It's all relative. Yes, this is the deepest and best team. And "pundits" are predicting it could be a top 25 team this season. But right now NU has 1 commit and 1 transfer for its efforts in 2017 and thus far in 2018. So I'd say it is a concern.......

Respectfully disagree.

I think the concern comes when the staff clearly compromises on the level of talent because they are in need of bodies. That hasn't happened and no indication that it will in the immediate future.

Regarding '17, both Turner and Gaines had 4* from ESPN. Ten years ago we'd join hands and dance in a circle at the Dyche Stadium 50 yard line for that level of class.

This is a big box of crazy.

I think Collins has done a great job building the program to this point. That was hard. What is going to be harder is establishing it as a consistent tournament contender. That requires sustained recruiting success, and folks are noticing that NU has not filled all its available scholarships for 2017, and has no commitments for 2018 yet. Is it too early to panic? Absolutely. Would we all like to see more progress on the recruiting front to date -- yes, yes we would. But the dynamic has changed --NU is no longer selling immediate playing time, the chance to be "the first" to take the team to the tourney, and NU is probably shooting a bit higher for B-list recruits. (I consider A-list recruits to be obvious one-and-done types. I may be wrong, but I don't think NU has offered any obvious one-and-dones for 2018). We've been turned down by all the B-list kids who have made decisions so far for 2018, but we're still in the hunt for several (Nance, Lathon, etc.). I think we'd all feel better if we got a commitment or two from a B-lister in the next month or so.

Typical daily over-reactions by posters. Idaho Alum focuses in on the 13th scholarship opening for 2017 which may still be filled by the coaching staff due to changes in college basketball teams (see Jalen Coleman-Lands transferring from UofI last week) and 1 recruiting miss by a player who was overhyped by a local columnist and Tribune writer who is frequently proven to be wrong. There are many more offers for 2018 recruits out there. I choose to focus on cbssports.com's college basketball experts who have NU at no. 15 in its Too Early Preseason Polls. I leave the sky is falling posts to Fitzphile and others.

Typical over-reaction by Walker Fan to others' more measured reactions. I haven't noticed any pieces of sky falling in my neighborhood, nor in my or Fitzphile's posts. What I have detected is concern, in particular that we haven't gotten any commitments for 2018 as yet. I think we all appreciate the value of momentum in recruiting (see Missouri's class, which just picked up yet another Illini refugee in Javon Pickett over the weekend). Again, as I noted above, it is not time to panic. No falling skies here. As an NU fan, I would just love to see the first shoe drop and some momentum to hang my hat on. But hey, I've been watching NU basketball since 1975, so no one appreciates what Collins and company have achieved so far more than me.

Vic Law committed on July 4 and McIntosh committed in September. So it's still early in the summer. But it's OK to simultaneously be excited about this fall and a little concerned that we haven't gotten anyone for 2018.

My personal belief is our recruiting will take off the day someone else replaces Coach K. It's got to be easy to use the prospect of Duke against us.

Disappointing. Really thought we had him. But looking on, should Collins offer more PGs? And whom? Do we go all in on Ayo? Seems to be a perfect fit but everything says hes going to UofI when they already have 3 pgs on the roster. And Lathon we're in the running for but by no means a favorite. Regardless of if we hit on our other top targets, not getting at least a 3 start with high potential will really hinder the positive feeling for the future.

When I wrote "all in", I meant NU went after him with everything they had. They identified him early, made him feel like a top priority and devoted a lot of time and resources to land him. It's a tough blow but by no means the end of the world.

And they continued to recruit, regardless. That's why all the other offers went out in the meantime. Just because Cormac got an offer before other guys doesn't mean that he is necessarily better. They see different kids at different times. They ID'd Ryan early because they have really been focusing on the NEPSAC a lot and saw him early. They didn't see Lathon until this spring, when he really took off in terms of recruiting interest. Ayo, in my mind, doesn't take a back seat to anyone. If NU lands either of those guys, I think we'll be happy.

I think NU has gone after some higher level kids the last two years and have missed on them. That's just the way it goes. But I like that they're not just going after kids because they need to fill a scholarship. The old adage in recruiting is that it's not the kids you don't get that get you beat; it's the kids you get that can't play. Gaines may not have been as highly regarded as some others, but I really like his game and have heard very good things about him from experts.

Besides, we should all remember that BMac was a second-tier Indiana State commit at this time four years ago, before he exploded during the July evaluation period. There's plenty of time.

... So it's still early in the summer ...

It's not just early. It's INCREDIBLY early.

Good luck to anyone who wants to start making judgements on the class of 2018 in June 2017. These guys know B10 players and they've earned leeway until the first couple weeks if the 2018 season.

Lou if you had to guess (and I know you want to do this -:), who would you say will be the next NU basketball commit?

I feel that this coaching staff is still focusing on their A-List recruits.

When we have found out that BC hated to and did not recruit.

Not only that, but his attitude was the 'gift' that kept on giving. Carmody's players had not been enamored with the recruiting process as HS prospects, and thus when they were supposed to be recruiting the HS kids during the official visits, they definitely lacked enthusiasm at times. In some ways, Bill recruited a team in his image. If you think back to some of the players and their quirks, it makes sense.

Recruiting requires top to bottom effort from the HC, to his assistants and recruiting coordinator, to the players who host the recruits and are supposed to get them excited to come to Alma Mater.

Babe Ruth.

If you want to hit the ball out of the park, you have to be willing to swing hard and miss fairly often.

I'm not worried. Collins is a stud and he's going to keep swinging big.

He could fill a class with Carmody-era talent in 48 hours if he wanted to. It's a good thing that he won't, not a bad thing.
