Does Previously Playing Stanford Help Us More Than It Helps Harbaugh?

As we all know, Harbaugh coached Stanford. I believe that Stanford and Michigan generally run the same offensive scheme. Stanford's base defense is the 3-4, while Michigan uses some 3-4.

Presumably the Stanford game is great preparation for playing Michigan. However, the Stanford game may provide the scUM coaches with insights on our team. Who is advantaged more by us playing Stanford, us or scUM?

No. First Michigan is not running a 3-4 defense. They started the season running a 4-3 but that stopped after the first game when they realized the lb unit wasn't great and they had 6 db that all play on a high level. Most of the game they play 4-2-5 against byu they played 4-1-6 90 percent of the game. On offense they do something's the same but Michigan does a lot more formations and personnel groups on the field

I just talked to a former editor of MGoBlog, who said that Michigan runs a 4-3 but with 3-4 gap assignments so the injured DE/LB guy can sometimes drop into coverage with Jabril Peppers playing a hybrid LB/safety.

What does a 4-1-6 look like?

A 4-1-6 looks like a 4-3 with 2 linebackers replaced with safeties and corners often times spaced wider to cover 4-5 WR sets. With a running QB and a solid RB we're not gonna see that set.

I guess if some of the DBs are built more like LBs, it could work . . . and obviously they're doing something right. But shouldn't someone like Vitale have an advantage with 6 DBs back there?

Does Vitale have an advantage on Jabril Peppers? Can't answer that but that's your match up.

3 cb 2 safety and peppers. The de/lb Rush 90 percent of time. Don't know what he is talking about with the 4-3. Michigan only played 2 lb against Maryland. Against byu the second lb only played 13 snaps the entire game. Peppers ability is allowing the defense to do a lot of things. Had a play 2 weeks ago I have never see before. He was covering the slot byu ran a draw play a pepper was fast enough to come off the slot and get to the rub for a 2 yard loss

Yes peppers and the strong safety have a good build to them.

Doesn't really make a difference.
