Don’t Sleep on Northern Illinois

I watched their game against DePaul. While DePaul is awful, bad roster, bad coaching, I would agree NIU poses a challenge.

Their PG is a very capable scorer, who put up 34 against the Blue Demons. Even if, astonishingly, DePaul kept going under on pick and roll, he's still a very good scorer who averaged 30 in Juco.

They have a very big Swiss dude, 6'11, athletic and a good paint protector. Also foul prone, but I am not sure our bigs are a big threat to put him on the bench with fouls.

They have a couple of other big capable bodies inside and outside. I guess what I am saying is that they won't look athletically mismatched against us.

They've only lost to Marquette this season. Granted, opposition was not that strong in other games and they were never in it against the Golden Eagles. But they looked capable. I'd dare guess, contenders for top 3 in the MAC.

We should at least have familiarity with their team from last season's match. The only new players are the Swiss center and a DePaul transfer who we also played against last year, while their best player from last year graduated.

No great interest in the game going by the $5 all in lower bowl seats or $3 upper deck seats.

Shame, this has the potential of being a good game.

I don’t think this game is going to be easy. They have length at guard and can shoot. Not a good matchup for Big Matt, and I think Preston and Hunger will get bigger minutes, along with that small lineup that had Martinelli at 5(IIRC).
David Coit is the guard who can shoot. He is averaging 20.8 ppg and hit eight 3s against DePaul. They have another guard, Zarique Nutter, averaging 16.3 ppg.

The Huskies rank fourth nationally with a whopping 29.5 free throw attempts per game, so they are an aggressive team. Yanic Konan Niederhauser, the 6-11 Swiss import, and Xavier Amos rank 1-2 in blocks in the MAC.

Their coach, by the way, is former DePaul guard Rashon Burno.

This is going to be a tough game and a good test for the Cats.
