Saturday when we arrived shortly before the game for a 3-0 Cats game, the parking lots were jammed and there was a ton of purple. The amazing thing is I am pretty sure many do not even enter the stadium and I am certain we have fans that do not stay a half before heading back out to drink regardless of score, temperature, rain, snow, sun, how good the team is doing or how close the game is. Our fans are the worst bunch of ass wipes I have ever seen in any sport. The clown in front of me complains about every punt and yet doesn't stay a half. Then we have the fans that don't like games that are early...or later in afternoon...or night games. Frankly, the worst fan base in the country and it has nothing to do with the size of the fan base which is the constant BS excuse. Our fans rarely cheer, arrive late, leave early, give opposing teams fans tickets and parking passes and are completely insane with wanting teams like Stanford, Vandy and Duke to win...ever. We want them to lose every game for the rest of eternity so that the recruits they get would find NU and our shitty facilities more desirable.

Cool story.

You really shouldn't hold back and let it fester like a huge boil. You should tell everyone exactly how you feel.

You've been missed.

We are a whiny bunch but hardly the worst.

Disagree about Stanford and Duke this season. Having beaten both of them this season, it is in our best interest to have them do well. If by the end of the season, NU's signature OoC victories are over the ACC Coastal and the Pac-North champs, that only helps our resume for bowl time. As for the other Nerd Cup teams, let them fail. I have no particular animosity toward Rice, but, yes, they don't help us. As for Vandy, let them rot because recruits...because SEC...because RVSP'ing by fax.

Our section was rocking... stood up every 3rd down, screamed our heads off, did Hands in the Air, cheered for the guy catching punts for $$$ and the BBQ bottle race, sang the school song every time etc.... etc... Maybe you need to sit in the cool section.

Go Cats!

Come on down to the SEC and check out Alabama fans, Auburn fans, Tennessee fans, Florida fans, and LSU fans. Yes, they make noise in the stands and support their team... until the first thing goes wrong and then they turn on their team in a heartbeat and leave the stadium in the middle of the third quarter booing. A missed kick results in fans throwing stadium debris at their own kicker. Then they go out and do thousands of dollars in property damage on their way out of the stadium. 90% of them did not attend school at the University and could care less about graduation rates or the impact on the school's reputation of a constant string of arrests, academic cheating scandals, and recruiting scandals. As long as the team wins.

You ask one of these fans about all of this and they respond "That's just college football."

I will take our fans any day of the week.

You think it was bad at the game, you should scroll through some of the comments on the board during the game. Talk about whiny and fair weather - brutal!

Whiny?... Guilty. :(
Fair weather?... I think I am okay there.

I whined but never tossed in the towel... in writing. I will not confess to what I yelled at the television set. ;)

Mikero, where in the world do you sit? Sounds terrible!! Come sit with us in 129, half way up. passionate and "with it:" Get rid of your tickets and move to a better neighborhood!

I just wish that we stand up more on third down stands.
We have an exciting defense, perhaps one of the best in our history and I cant feel silly getting up alone and block the views of other cat fans behind me.

I confess to leaving early due to an early morning commitment today. But I was also lined up at 10am to get a spot in the west lot for my tailgate. 11 hours at Ryan Field was still a lot.

I also credit my leaving to the offense starting to click. So you're welcome.

Welcome back! can't say I disagree with most of what you typed.

I have been listening to Tennessee radio today on the internet. As anticipated, 100% of the UT callers have completely turned on the coach after two tough losses against presently ranked teams where they dropped leads in the 4th quarter. While I get the disappointment, these same callers were saying Butch Jones was one of the best coaches in the NCAA three weeks ago. Now they are saying he is the worst and should be fired.

As bad as NU fans can be at times, we are not like UT fans.

True. Do you think there might have been more than a smattering of boos as the team left the field in Knoxville if it had been TN playing the way NU did in the first half?

Booing at least implies fans care - his point is NU fans just don't show up or leave early, give tickets to opponents etc. even when the team is in the top 20. How true that is I don't know, I know on the message board during the game a thread was started tracking other random games because a poster wanted to watch some real football not the crap he thought NU was playing.

Ha, and probably not as bad as a big chunk of PSU fans.

A lot of them were denigrating what BOB did for their program and had nothing but praise for Franklin (irrespective if his rep as a gameday coach and pretty much just on his recruiting prowess).

Fastforward to this season and many of them had turned on Franklin.

The UT fans would have been throwing stuff at the bench and screaming obscenities about the coach's families. And then mailing some dog feces to ESPN for old times sake.

Mikero1 would probably appreciate that more than the indifference he feels is the problem. Any fan base has a smaller % that would be called rabid. Since our base is small we have a much smaller number. THe Dark ages also took a big chunk of what should be the fan base. There are maybe 30K alums in the Chicago area and about 1/3 of those would have been Dark Ages alums. In general the rabid fans might be 5 to 10% of the fan base. Fur us that is a pretty small number and the more casual fans basically keep them separated, minimizing their impact (people telling them to sit down is an example)

We are not a large or a great fanbase, that's for sure. I am encouraged by the student section so far this season.

You've got it wrong--not ass wipes. NU grads are just sensitive and easily bored.

Duke had a ranked Ga. Tech on a rainy day on Saturday and the far stands were less than half full. I would rank us ahead of them. As good as Cutcliffe is, unless they hire coach K to handle football as well as hoops, they will never ever draw.

They have TV in Fiji?
Fiji is civilization. I am on a much smaller island named Kwajalein. US Army base so we have internet. My wife got me slingbox so we can watch all of our cable channels from home. Best wife ever.

The bad news is that when everyone on the island gets up, then the bandwidth goes down. The Ball state game was choppy, pixelized (I could not see the ball or make out the numbers on the clock) and I saw about 2 out of every three plays. So beyond the frustration of how bad the team looked in the first half, I had the frustration of not being able to really see what was going on. I figured out the game was over and we had won when I saw Fitz trotting onto the field.

I don't pay much attention to the fans' comings and goings, as I'm focused on the game, but I do get frustrated with how quickly the fans around start licking old wounds. One bad half or a few turnovers and everyone starts moaning about how none of the three previous wins matter. Everything suddenly becomes doom and gloom. As a fan from the early to mid '80s, I can tell you that we've come a long way since a victory meant "lake-ing the posts."

I just wish the folks around me would have a little more faith and patience before they start moaning and groaning.

You might try reading the Duke board and checking what their attendance was like the past Saturday.

Last Saturday, the Duke game was the place to go if you wanted to be alone with your girl. The "crowd" looked mighty sparse indeed.

If you start a day feeling good about the world, just go to an Internet sports board or sit among a group of fans when their team is having a bad quarter. That'll bring you down in a hurry. After spending many years as a journalist watching people behave badly and having people lie to my face I'm hardly a pollyanna, but the amount of negativity abroad in the U.S. these days is ridiculous.

That's the difference between you and me. You say the stands were half full. I say they were half empty.

I have had people tell me that they will never watch a football game with me again. I am a terrible person with whom to watch a televised game. I get upset, very negative, yell at the screen, pace around. I embarrass myself. For years, I would not watch a game live. I would record it and only watch it after I knew we had won. My blood pressure just could not handle it. Strangely, I am very calm at the stadium watching a live game. I don't know why the difference.

This year, I seemed to be better and just was sitting tense and quiet through the first three games. Until Ball State. The old me came out. I think the difference was missed tackles. That was what set me off. We went through three games with almost no missed tackles. Then they seemed to come in droves in the first half of the Ball State game. I lost it.

I am better now.
