Evanston asks to pause the new stadium

Pausing the stadium rebuild would take a catastrophic situation and turn it into an even bigger/longer-term mess because it changes nothing about the fact that this rebuild is needed whether now or in 5 years.

Just no; the stadium rebuild needs to go forward. Better to be away from Evanston sooner than later if we need to be out for 2 seasons during the rebuild anyhow.

This will give the Evanston cohorts that would like NU to drop football and get rid of the stadium more ammunition.
Sure, but that doesn't mean the administration should make the mistake of falling into that trap.

There will *always* be opposition to this project. The opposition latching onto this hazing situation/Fitz firing to try to stop the project is nothing different from the opposition prior to now.

If we delay the project, that would be the biggest mistake of this entire episode, without question.

I hate to break it to you but I just don’t see it happening. The money men will press the pause button.

You and I both know there's only one person that can halt it (other than Schill + key members of the board) and that's Pat Ryan himself.

If that's the call he makes, fine, it's his to make and I can respect that. I still think it's a mistake because it's needed and without Ryan's backing it may never happen.

I just hate to think that this fiasco taking place before shovels are in the ground could push this project off indefinitely when it's so sorely needed.

They want to pause on the building of a structure that will last a hundred years and take more than two years to build because of the hazing scandal. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

They’re not wrong. It is time for the dollars to go elsewhere. Continuing to invest in Northwestern football is a complete waste of resources.

I don’t think Ryan is going to be in a rush to write any checks. If it happens, it won’t be for a while but my guess is it never happens.

I don't know Pat Ryan but I always felt that he wants his name on a new stadium badly and wants that to be his lasting legacy long after he's gone. I can't imagine Fitz's employment or the team's W/L record factors into his mental calculus.

At least that's what I'm hoping for because our existing stadium is just dire.

Pat Ryan is in his mid-80s. He can’t afford to wait.

Unfortunately, a handful of dolts are in charge of getting it done.

I'll admit I'm feeling pessimistic right now - but let's say we build the new stadium. Can we even find enough Cats fans to fill it based on the anticipated crap-show we could have for the next few years? I was planning to travel to last game at Ryan Field. Sadly, I guess, it won't be this year.

Here's the thing, you want to get it done in the next 3 years because these are probably going to be pretty lean years.

If we get the stadium done, then we come out of it with best in class facilities across the board with Big Ten resources ($80+ million per year conference distributions that may eventually help towards NIL).

We'll have the resources to find a coach that can win here. There aren't that many jobs with the resources we have and the opportunity here.

Evanston and the Ryan Field neighbors aren't against rebuilding the stadium. They aren't anti-sports. They're against rezoning a residential neighborhood as an entertainment district and hosting large, for-profit concerts to service the debt on the stadium.

We're not looking forward to 3-4 years of construction and the noise, traffic and pollution that it will entail. But we'll survive it and will be excited to see games at the rebuilt Ryan Field. All we're asking is for alternative financing that doesn't rely on huge concerts that will trash a highly-taxed neighborhood with limited parking.

It's the dolts in the athletic department who are making a mess of this, not NIMBY neighbors. Their traffic plan is disastrous for concerts, their sound study is full of holes, and their request for unlimited for-profit concerts with audience below 10K is what makes this so offensive. That's like a basketball game at W-R every night, plus 10 mega-concerts.

If the stadium gets delayed, it will be due to same arrogant, tone-deaf athletic department that is currently in such disarray. I want a new stadium, but I don't trust the current, ham-fisted athletic department to do things right -- at least based on their record to-date.

That's a really helpful explanation. Thank you!

Tank the stadium, but money into something that actually makes a difference: NIL

The problem is, staying in the current stadium without major changes is not a viable option. Unfortunately, NU needs both at the same time.
We don’t need one of the fanciest stadiums in the entirety of college sports.

That’s true.

The latest reports on NIL at the biggest programs suggest donor fatigue with poor performance and transfers. I’m not sure NU donors would prefer that route to getting a new stadium they can personally enjoy.
