If I post anything with negative implications , I try to do it on the pay board
NU really has to do more to involve the Evanston and Northern Suburbs in the athletics program. Somehow NU has to generate more community involvement .
I attended the 10 year reunion of my son's 2006 Lacrosse National Championship at UVA. It was a beautiful Spring weekend but I again was stunned by the sheer number of fans that showed up for the lacrosse game (Duke v UVA) and the baseball game (UVA V UNC). Klockner Field and Davenport Stadium are adjacent to each other and the number of families with kids carrying a lacrosse stick or baseball glove was amazing.
I would estimate 6-7000 at the lacrosse game(UVA is disappointing this year) and more than that at the baseball game(UVA is reigning National Champs)..
I know the argument will be that there is not as much to do in Charlottesville but I don't think that holds water. The population of the Northern Suburbs dwarfs that of C'ville. The parking lots were filled with tailgaters for both baseball and lacrosse. There were kids everywhere playing catch or practicing face dodges against imaginary opponents while carrying their lacrosse sticks.
The night before the games, Downtown Charlottesville was hopping . "The Corner" was standing room only at the restaurants and pubs. The walking mall was elbow to elbow with all the outdoor seats taken at every restaurant and drinking establishment
If NU could foster such excitement in Evanston and surrounds, I am sure the existing hostility would fade as businesses flourish and tax income rises accordingly. The John Paul Jones Arena is a beautiful building that houses UVA BB which has been quite good the last few years but there was a sold out Luke Bryan Concert there on Saturday night., again with minimal impact on the community other than outstanding business for the town's establishments
Charlottesville and UVA have worked out a symbiotic relationship that benefits the school and community
