Fearless Forecast: Iowa vs. Northwestern

The absolute best would be 1-0, with the victorious point coming from the rarest of all possible scores, the 1-point safety.

"Oh, you're making that up!" I hear you say. NO!

So a 1-point safety can only happen on a try, which means that it can only occur after a team has scored a touchdown, so a 1-0 final score is impossible, right?

NO!

Because in college football overtimes, starting on the 3rd overtime period, each overtime period simply consists of each team attempting a 2-point try.

So here's what's going to happen:

  1. NU and Iowa will reach the end of regulation with a 0-0 tie, going to overtime.
  2. Then in each of the first two overtime periods, both teams will fail to score.
  3. Then, starting on the 3rd overtime, each team must attempt a 2-point conversion. Of course, both teams will fail to convert the try for several overtimes.
  4. Finally, on the 10th overtime, Iowa will fail their 2-point try. Then NU will line up for their turn, and then throw an interception on the 1-foot line, but then the hapless Iowa player with the ball will fumble the ball back into the end zone. Then another Iowa player will pounce on the ball and be ruled down in the end zone for a 1-point safety.
'Cats win, 1-0!

I'm old enough to remember Illinois and Northwestern playing to an ignominious 0-0 tie, Cats finished 0-10-1 that season, That tie was the season opener.

Would really love to break our losing streak at Wrigley...and to do it against Iowa when the chips are down...even better.
