The future of the Fitz administration was discussed at length at my Homecoming tailgate, especially after we left the game early.

One friend of mine made a great point. There is zero chance that Fitz is let go until the new stadium is fully funded. A new coach with no ties to the school just doesn't have the same appeal to the big donors. That doesn't mean that Fitz is still there to coach the first game in the new stadium, but he is going to be with us in 2023 and 2024.

Name me any coaches out there that are Northwestern men and proven winners. Northwestern has no choice but to get an outsider as there is no one on the current staff that really knows how to build a program. Damn, the best coaches in NU history were outsiders, so it is moronic for the donors to want a Northwestern man. This isn't Michigan or Ohio State. The defections of recruits will be many if we end up 1-11 and then you have that cascading effect. Fitzgerald needs to come to his senses that what he wants simply doesn't work and start from scratch ASAP. If this disaster continues through 2024, the program is dead.

Fitz will likely be coaching at NU as long as Fitz wants to coach at NU
Not if he only produces 2-win seasons.

I do still have faith that Fitz will make the necessary changes. He did fire Colby (and hired Hank), and he did fire McCall. He's not going to fire anybody in the middle of the season, and he likes to give people a chance to turn things around, but I do believe he will make the tough decisions at the end of the day.

Kafka could be a guy, but he's on the fast track to an NFL head coaching gig with his ability to make Daniel Jones look good and get that Giant offense going.

We don't know what Kafka's priorities and goals are. If it's to be an NFL head coach ASAP, he won't have any interest in NU should the school and Fitz part ways. If it's stability, a (relatively) low-stress head coaching job, and being set for life winning 6 or 7 games a season with occasional conference championship appearances and hopefully winning some, then the two sides should talk.

Kafka would be a decent choice if he isn't strictly a NFL guy. He would be obviously offensive oriented and apt to hire the best available DC or up and coming one. Hopefully he is hungry to win. Fitz seems to not really care. He knows he is on easy street with his contract. The administration and fat cat donors are idiots. A division titles in a rather weak division doesn't warrant such a ridiculous contract. That is a contract you give a guy that just won a natty!

Wasn’t Tucker’s first game after the big contract his first OSU throttling?

Kafka’s an NFL guy, never had to do recruiting or deal with girlfriend problems. He’s not coming to NU.

For a program with such a terrible to above average history, we sure are obsessed with bringing back contributors to be coaches here.

Give me an OC who scores a bunch of points in the Sun Belt or the WAC and wants to springboard two great seasons at NU into a head job. Give me a DC who is leading the MAC or the Gateway in scoring defense. Give me a coach who can coach, at whatever level he’s at.

The JoePa way, thankfully, isn’t a replicable strategy anymore.

then who's the HC?

If Kafka's goal was to be NU HC, he'd be on a college assistant career path. At least for now, he's clearly on track to be a hot NFL HC hire.

NUCat320, you have hit on some points that I agree with wholeheartedly. But first, I agree with the sentiments of many that Fitz is a good fit for NU's philosophy of maintaining the "student" in student-athlete. He also accepts or deals with the NU policies that many coaches would struggle with mightily. He appears to have the blessings and support of those who can effect change. I'm not implying that those blessings are eternal, but he has a lot of goodwill among them and many other fans.

If I was Dr. Gragg, here is the conversation that I would have with Fitz:

"Coach, without discussion, I'm confident that we can agree that the trajectory of our team is far from ideal. As the level of financial support of the program has grown so has the expectations of the on-the-field results. To put it bluntly, the gap between the two cannot continue at its current measure. I acknowledge that we face inherent difficulties at NU that others in our conference don't face (ie small, recruiting/academic requirements.

We have looked closely at other "disadvantagedut successful programs and tried to understand what they do differently. We have reached the conclusion that we need to create a system unlike our conference opponents. I understand that as a player and as a young coach you had success with a "run the ball-stop the run philosophy." It's historically the BIG10 way.

But as the game has evolved, I believe we would be better served with a more aggressive offensive and defensive philosophy. The best path to achieve this is for you to continue the season with your current staff and emphasize developing your young players who are showing promise.

We believe, that with the right changes, you are still the coach to lead the program. In order to maintain our trust in you, we are strongly urging you to do the following.

By year's end, you need to have identified and hired new coordinators. We are restricting your choices to young, creative coaches who have demonstrated success beyond their resources and player talent, with a track record of developing players beyond their recruit ratings. Also, in coordination with your new hires, position coaches and staff positions will be filled. It's our expectation that your most of your staff will be new, as we wouldn't saddle new coordinators with old thoughts and ways.

Coach, I appreciate you providing this exciting plan to take NUFB to new heights. I have hired a firm to quietly provide you with your search. They will be in the city this weekend to formulate the search plan. We will meet with them at our meeting hotel at 10:00 AM Saturday. Let's elevate the goals on to wall, Coach!!! GoCats!!!!

@KappaKat , this is quite lovely.

There is definitely a comparison that can be drawn to his coaching mentor, Randy Walker, who fully abandoned his offensive approach and brought, seemingly out of nowhere, one of the most fun seasons NU fans have ever experienced.

From I-formation, grind it out, to one of the most exciting offenses in the country in the span of an offseason, and with very little personnel change.

There were some personnel on the defensive side who served under Hank but were "skipped over" when giving the job to JON. They seemed to be effective when serving under Hank, and I would not want to punish them for the failure of JON's system, if they are able and willing to reapply Hank's principles if allowed to do so.

Yep. And the glamor program jock sniffers on TV derided the offense as a gimmick, which probably cost DA2 the Heisman. But then the spread offense became legit when their schools started running it.

Colby was inherited and wasn’t his buddy and it took a Carmodyesque 13 seasons to get rid of McCall. Imagine 13 years of JON and Mike Bajakian. It’ll make me long for the Peay years

McCall at least had the Hank defense to lean on...

JON and Bajakian are overseeing disasters on both sides of the ball.

Everyone is exposed when the overall record is expected to be 1-11 or 2-10 at best.

The situation now is very different from 5 or 10 years ago.

We're not looking at a pair of 5 win seasons as the nadir of NU football.

We're on a trip to the Dark Ages. This is very different and untenable for a long period of time. Fitz knows that.

What’s PF’s current overall and B1G record? Let’s see 110-95 and 65-70. So this situation has turned him into a losing B1G coach. By end of next season, overall record will flip.

So - he is quickly eroding his winningest coach of modern era identity. It’s going to be tough for him to fall to Venturi, Green, Peay stature - but given his contract, attitude and lack of balls - not out of the question.

One thing is guaranteed. He will quickly be assured to not be in the conversion of greatest NU FB coach ever. Those of you still drunk on the koolaid are going to awake to a terrible hangover.

Well, so says the fact that he hasn't fired them yet.

Pains me to say it but everything Cannoli says, even if he made it up, rings true.

By your logic since I haven’t killed Putin, I’m best friends with Putin

No, Fitz hasn’t fired either O’Neil nor Bajakian that doesn’t mean they are safe as they are friends of Fitz and seen as good recruiters as Cannoli states

Not my logic at all.

I'm saying that what Cannoli is saying wouldn't shock me given the record of misplaced loyalty and stubborness that Fitz has demonstrated over the years. That he hasn't fired anyone yet makes him different from probably any other P5 coach in similar circumstances. These bums should have lost their jobs a long time ago. They haven't, and I don't believe they will. And the only reason for that is because Fitz is who he is.
