Fitz on social media

Pardon me if this has been posted and discussed already, but I thought this was pretty interesting, particularly the idea that your friends can negatively affect how you are perceived by those investigating your presence on social media.

One of the better Fitz videocasts that I have seen. Not coach speak. Very clear and very concise with solid information in it.

Great talk. Right up to the point where he talked about abusing his kids: "I got a fist for those three knuckleheads". Inappropriate to glibly throw out the threat of smacking around his kids. Maybe that was OK when I was growing up, but not today.

Really? Are we THAT easily offended nowadays?

I thought it was funny and refreshing in this age of political correctness.

I wasn't offended, but I'll admit it made me a little uncomfortable.

Overall though, I liked hearing the whole video, because it was the fist time in a long time that he seemed to be talking frankly and not quite so "coachspeak."

Freudian slip?

Positive Coaching Alliance is a great group with which to be affiliated . Happy that both Fitz and Collins are part of their cadre.

As someone who does a lot with and on social media I can really identify with this piece. The athlete of today is more scrutinized than ever before. In many instances I think it's very unfair because in the case of recruits, these kids are 16 to 17 years old and in many cases are being judged without the notion that they truly are just kids. That said though it's a level playing field for everyone and it just forces them into making wise and not hasty decisions about what they put out via social media. Make a mistake 20 years ago and unless it's life altering it goes away. Make a mistake now and it's there forever for all to see.

Glades hit it on the head. In the context of an obviously light and hunerous moment, his fist comment was both funny and refreshing. Like Fitz, I raised 3 boys. Unlike Fitz, I also raised a young girl. Two very different challenges. My fist was a paddle. It's threat alone was very influential with the boys. And they have all grown up to be successful, respectful and family centric young men.

Don't have any second thoughts, Glades. When I am confronted with the fact of my social media association with you via Wildcat Report, I will live with whatever perception results.

However, I remain a bit concerned about any perceived association between me an your incessant cat video even if it may, perhaps, exemplify how Fitz treats his knuckleheads.

I know you want to rip Fitz and the program for everything they do and say because of 2 losing seasons, but accusing the man of beating his kids is going way to far.

NJCat didn't accuse Fitz of beating his kids. He thought the remark might startle those with overly sensitive PC minds.

Actually, 3 losing seasons out of the last 4, but who's counting?

And we can agree to disagree, but I thought it was just a stupid statement to make, when the whole serious point he was trying to make, and a very good point at that, was "don't make stupid statements or do stupid stuff on social media".

Seemed like an innocent comment in jest about the challenges of raising a young family and the growing pains associated with it! Personally, not offended or uncomfortable at all. I can't believe it even raised an eyebrow. The message was spot on and as someone that hires employees, it is factual. Hopefully, if we want to continue to criticize the HC we can do it for matters that are actually relevant.

Who's counting? Well you are, it seems.

It's a great video and showcases Fitz who represents beautifully what NU is all about. The fist comment is totally benign as he was making a joke about his own family. Hard to imagine anyone could interpret it negatively.

You don't have to imagine... just scroll up. :)

Fitz does not beat his kids. Period. It was simply humor that was used in the moment. I have seen him with his kids and he uses his voice, but not his fists. Wow this guy can't win.

I have zero concerns that he does.

Given the pervasiveness of domestic abuse, however, it just isn't an appropriate topic for joking around. Just because people laughed at it doesn't make it OK in my opinion.

Everyone has a right to their opinion. My opinion is that you are taking how he handles his three boys out of context...he never mentioned anything about his wife to even bring up domestic abuse.

Not to debate the point further, but as an FWI:

"Who Can be Victims of Domestic Violence The definition of domestic violence goes on to say that victims can include anyone, regardless of socioeconomic background, education level, race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender. Domestic violence used to be referred to as wife abuse. However, this term was abandoned when the definition of domestic violence changed to recognize that wives are not the only ones who can fall victim to domestic violence. The definition of domestic violence now recognizes that victims can be:
- Spouses
- Sexual/Dating/Intimate partners
- Family members
- Children
- Cohabitants "

As someone who mentioned upthread that I was "uncomfortable" about the joke, I also want to say that I have absolutely zero belief that Fitz abuses his kids. That isn't the point at all. To me it was an attempt at a joke in a touchy area that wasn't a particularly funny "joke" (your mileage may vary of course). My response was probably akin to, "Come on Fitz, you know better."

The irony to me about it all was it was the context of talking about people saying stupid things using social media, and here he was saying something "stupid" - again, your mileage may vary, but certainly those who found it funny might conceive that someone might take it out of context and make a big deal about it - using traditional (and not social) media. ESPN and others have probably taken quotes out of context and made mountains out of those molehills on less.

Other than the brief moment I cringed, I really enjoyed the rest of the piece and found it refreshing. I'm excited for this season and love that he's our coach. Just 40 more days.

Do you guys in this thread not realize that people often complain that Fitz only uses "coach speak" and "vanilla" and "rah-rah" talk?

This thread is a perfect example why a mentor like Gary Barnett or Randy Walker probably told him "kiddo, when talking to the media just be nice, friendly and dull".

Congratulations fans. You have just shown everyone why Fitz is right to only be mister coachspeak and misten no offense rah-rah.

When he makes an obviously not literal comment about his kids on the board people jump down his throat.

Hey Fitz, if you are reading this thread, just stick to the coach speak. It's in your best interest as this thread shows.

Gotcha, but even as a social worker I know that is not how the layman see's domestic violence. Thanks for the education. Sorry if this fuels the debate but I am 100% confident Fitz didn't mean to offend and believe he was taken out of context; clearly he needs to bring back the coach speak.
