Not much interesting stuff today...
Opening statement
Fired up about our four captains.
Paddy second opportunity. Trae great training camp, great career, including kicking game.
Bennett and Jared developed into leaders during career.
Exciting to go back to Bay Area. Expecting fan support.
The guys had a great training camp.
Changes since 2015 game: Personnel, coaching, on-field success: 36 wins, three bowl wins, Big Ten West tile. Hopefully a lot of consistency.
Apply 2015 game to this: They have different personnel. Tend to overanalyze the opener. I’ve got to make sure we don’t do too much.
Feel about QB: Whole room had a great camp. All the guys did the best job they could. We have multiple guys we can win with.
Game time/time change: Play in the afternoon, practice in morning. Sleep patterns. Stretch on plane, Friday routine. Longer plane flight. If night game, it would be different. This year, 1 pm
Costello and offense and how they compare to Big Ten scheme: Reminds me of Jones the last few years. Feel the same way when I watch KJ on tape. All kinds of passing records. Really efficient. Recruited well at WR, outstanding TE. Compare to Big Ten: Lots of West Coast principles. Wisconsin little bit, Michigan, Michigan State. Everybody has it.
Gave a rundown of position groups. Pretty standard stuff. Solid competitive depth across the squad.
Kubiuk: He’s starting. I’m fired up. Injuries, missed multiple years. Missed two years with same injury.
Wisdom carried over from last year: Way you prepare. Last year, we prepared well for Purdue, then took a step sideways. Team finally woke up going into Michigan week. Older guys saw that dip. We’ve got to be relentless than that.
What do you/don’t you know about team: How do we handle everything that happens in game. Lesson learned from Miami/Florida game: penalties, sacks, etc. Trying to prepare vs. keeping guys healthy. If I was an NFL coach, I wouldn’t play starters in any preseason game. We’re as healthy and as good a shape as we ever have been.
Will any true freshmen play? I feel great about the class. I hope we get four games for the entire class.
Staying healthy: Two years ago, took a micro-level look at camp, how to bring guys along and reduce soft-tissue injuries. Focus, tempo was better this year, in second time going through it. Goal is to come out calloused, ready to go, etc.
Andrew Luck: Texted his dad Oliver. Fitz’s son said it took a lot of courage to do that. Know family very, very well. Football is not who we are. It rewards you and can take a lot away from you. Impressed with how Luck handled it after the game. Every point, every athlete has to make a decision. Fitz made it after tryout with Saints. He had a great run, a great career. He hopes Luck’s courage is an example to others. You have to be healthy and emotionally ready to play. Takes a strong person to do that.
I thought we were right in the mix.
2018 moments: Bennett’s catch in Iowa City. Senior Night winning four straight vs. rival and then have celebration at his house. Going to Indianapolis, student support. Way the guys responded in second half vs. Utah and celebration on field at Holiday Bowl.
Skowronek’s development: Played right away, made a lot of great plays. He’s obsessed with football. Does as much as he can to be as good as he can be.
Big jumps in offseason: Dan Kubiuk. Was gonna be starter two years ago and missed two years. He’s gone a terrific job.
Mangieri: Charlie’s been fantastic since he’s gotten here. Pugh is great, getting better every day (you can read between the lines there). Guy we can move around and do different things with. Dynamic.
Wyatt Blake move to defense: Looked at big picture. He’s a big man. Probably wouldn’t have gotten a lot of playing time on OL, needed to solidify underbelly of DL.
