he said : "Ultimately, it’s going to come down to -- at a minimum, in the opener -- who do we believe is going to go out, move the football for us, score touchdowns and make our football team better because he’s on the field,”

so at least we know it will be a guy. That eliminates about half the world's population

Just wait until the scrimmage tomorrow, we'll hear about every throw by every QB and each site will overanalyze and come up with their prediction for starting QB.

We do know this: 2 players cannot be wearing the same number.

Christian Jones will be wearing #14 this season and we except him to be on the field. Lloyd Yates is also wearing #14, so I'm going to say that Yates will be a redshirt and will not be this years QB.

It gets a little more complicated here: Xavier Pierre Youngblood-Ary is #11. In his career he has 8 catches for 106 yards and 1 TD. He could move to being a special teams player only, but with the amount of DBs we have, I don't see that happening although I expect to see him on some kickoff coverage and blocking. TJ Green is also wearing #11 . I'd say it's pretty likely that he was given the number of a SR. WR because he also won't be playing.

#7 Alviti/Odenigbo DE
#10 Oliver/Murray DB
#17 Kubiak/McShepard DB
#18 Thorson/Walker LB

So really, this QB race is down to 4 people considering how Fitz has tipped his hand.

Could make an ill-advised Barnett comment here, but won't.

Not quite true. Two players with the same number cannot be on the field at the same time. But if one is on O and the other on D, OK We have had that situation on several occasions in the past.

Alviti and IO for example.....#7s

That's what I meant

Shakes, you best me to it. That happens all the time. Dan Persa came to mind immediately. I heard people saying "what the hell is Persa doing out there on defense?" all the damn time!

It's also quite easy to change a number on game day (or even during a game) if the decision is made to burn a red shirt. It's not like jersey numbers are social security numbers...

My legit. guess is almost for certain that Oliver starts against Stanford with a short leash to Thorson. Frankly, I'm pretty sure that I would do the same thing if I were Fitz. Oliver has a game and a half under his belt and while he did poorly against Illinois, you certainly can't blame all that on him. I'm not high on Aliviti, mainly because he showed me nothing last year that indicates he's good running the football. In the past both Kafka and Persa, before securing the starting jobs showed they could REALLY run the football. We know Oliver can throw it and I believe that despite him being slow, that he still can run it a bit.

I'll bet money that won't happen. Thorson will start vs. Stanford.

We do?

I understand that. Was wondering if that had officially gone public anywhere.
Nothing is public, and despite our guesses/leanings, coaches have not given any public indication. I will say with very good knowledge (from earlier this week, and things change) that Thorson has not been anointed anything, and coaches like the intangibles of Alviti and Oliver, particularly leadership (which takes on a new meaning post-union). It is closer than we think - and nothing would surprise me come 14 days from now.
