1. Overall: The fundamental strength of this team is the balance and depth.

2. Still extremely young (Arguably our 7 best players have 3-4 years of eligibility left after this season) but it gained a ton of experience last year and it shows. This is a veteran, young team.

3. Nearly every kid looks better than last year. Kopp can score off the dribble, Buie is more aggressive and consistent, Nance is better in all phases, Young is a menace when he gets going on offense (did you see that spin move vs a future NBA guy).

4. Buie: Leader on the floor, plays with swagger, aggressiveness, resilience, sets the tone offensively. Can take over games as we all know--if he can find ways to get himself going more consistently he could be an all big-ten candidate.

5. Nance: I will controversially say that he has been our best player in the big ten. He literally snatches balls out of the air with his length even over top big men which almost gives the energetic jolt of a blocked shot. He has the most upside of any NU player I've seen in 25+ years and is still just scratching the surface. If he can play 80% this well throughout the big ten, I'd be thrilled.

6. Kopp: efficient, strong, can now shoot better off the dribble and has the gravitational effect of defenses needing to know where he is at all times. Lacks lateral quickness and gets burned at times, but a huge player for us overall.

7. Audige: He looked horrendous and incredible in the same game. Like Buie if he can learn to get himself going more consistently we'll have 2 guys who can create offense and draw fouls, when usually we have none.

8. Gaines: Tough on defense as always, a couple nice drives. His lack of a 3 pt shot keeps him from being on the floor all the time.

9. Greer: Steady on both ends, legit big ten caliber back-up PG and can score when left open so keeps teams honest.

10. Young. His footwork, touch and nifty moves are amazing. He makes as much with his limited athleticism as any player I've seen at NU. Defenses will continue to underestimate him.

11. Berry: Prettiest shot on the team along with Kopp. Plays veteran defense and you can see he is used to playing among elite players so his adjustment to D1 bball is impressive.

12. Beran: Hope he gets healthy. Tough defense, length and athleticism along with Nance and others make our team really tough. Amazing we can lose a talent like him and not miss a beat at IU.

Great analysis.

I am happiest about how Greer is playing. He has taken the most crap of any scholarship player the last 2 years, didn't quit or transfer and has really stepped up his game. Just a hard-nosed, solid kid.

Agreed. I think Greer has made a significant improvement and no significant drop off in ability. Looks like a totally new player

Audige was incredible and horrendous in the same game. But he was incredible in late second half which made the difference. Last 7 - 8 minutes of the game is where the step up needs to be.

Let me add to the Greer parade because I would have been the first to say he did nothing for me.

He's really steadied his game, and he's making some nice contributions night after night so far. He's really improved his game. He's a nice piece to the puzzle off the bench.

This. He had an impossible task coming in in the wake of the Lathon fiasco, and easily could have folded. Instead he toughened up, got better, and now is a major contributor. A lot of people here wrote him off. He is throwing it back in their faces. Good on him.

Totally agree. I never thought Greer was as bad as people made him out--he always moved his feet great on defense, could hit the open 3, could drive to the basket if the lane opened, had a more than adequate handle and most of all just always had great attitude no matter what was going on. My guess is 99% of kids in the same situation would've been resentful or transferred, but he showed commitment and heart. I can almost guarantee this kid is gonna be successful in all phases of his life because of these intangibles. Even if he doesn't play great, he works hard, stays positive and focuses on the team.

looks like they only have 10 scholarship players on the roster. Next season they need a true big and of course PBj! Has anyone seen Nicholson play?

In his limited minutes he has made one nifty pass, thrown down a pretty vicious dunk, grabbed a few rebounds on the plus side. On the minus side he has muffed a few passes to him and is a pretty slow defender laterally. But his size addresses mobility limitations on D. He has more natural gifts than Young (taller, bigger wingspan, can jump). But he needs more development time.

Sounds pretty good but still think other than PBJ they still need a big man who can jump and block shots.

He has one of those things you just cannot teach. He is 7 ft and you just cannot teach that. But it does take time to grow into. A bit of a project as young 7 footers tend to be. That is why the goal shoult be to RS him and get him the extra year to develop. Like what I have seen so far but it is very limited. Rememnber Young? We had not seen him his first year and he has developed into a very solid guy. Not spectacular but solid and glad he is hear. Nicholson has more upside but will need time to develop

He’s already played so he can’t redshirt (in a normal season). Not sure if the eligibility rules for basketball for the crazy 20-21 season.

Spin move was fantastic...except he missed the shot! Would like to see him go stronger to the hoop (don't be afraid to dunk!) but I can't complain about what he's accomplished for NU in his time here. I don't know how much longer he will be underestimated.

He'll be underestimated forever because he doesn't look the part. Young was excellent yesterday because he is very good at fundamental basketball. Take a look at his stat line willy, and then tell me he isn't a true big. While I believe he will get there, Nicholson has a long way to go before he gets to Ryan's level.

Good summary!

Eligibility rues are the same as football. Free year for everyone. Probably why he has already played.

Also in normal years, you can redshirt as long as you don’t play in a certain percentage of games, if I’m not mistaken. One game doesn’t burn a shirt.

You can't play any games to redshirt, unless you are injured. You can play up to 30% of the games and get a medical redshirt, which is what you are thinking of. Gaines got a medical redshirt last season, as did Crawford and Demps among others.

Has anyone been able to confirm if Young can actually dunk? :)

Correct. Football changed its redshirt rules but basketball hasn’t adopted them yet. But again, this is a free year. Teams are also allowed to recruit the classes they would have had, but the hard cap of 13 goes back into effect after next season IIRC

So my understanding is Gaines can return and not count against our scholarship numbers for next season. If this is the case, we just freed up an additional spot for PBJ, yes?

He has a verticle like mine. He is 6'10" and he would likely come up two inches short in a dunk
