Let’s pretend Loyola (Chicago) has a previous engagement Nov. 6. Which other teams would make for a good dance partner when Northwestern unveils the new and (vastly) improved Welsh-Ryan Arena?

Do we know for sure that Nov. 6th is the date, irrespective of who we play?

Actually, the Daily Northwestern cites November 2 as the first games:

The arena, which has been undergoing construction since March 2017, is likely to first host men’s and women’s games Nov. 2, Schapiro said. The opening is planned to coincide with the Nov. 3 football game against Notre Dame, which is likely to draw a large NU crowd.

“That’s going to be a heck of a weekend. And that place is going to be packed,” Schapiro said. “The students are going to go crazy when they see how unbelievable, wonderful that new arena’s going to be. … I can’t wait.”

Anyhow, the Daily's article seems dated March 3rd, whereas Greenstein's article is from yesterday...presumably TG's information is more recent, and (presumably) more reliable.

You are correct: the NCAA voted to move the start date up from the 9th to the 6th to allow more flexibility in scheduling. From the NCAA site:

“It was getting lost on the weekend,’’ said Gavitt. Television windows were hard to come by on the weekend with college football and the NFL. That won’t be an issue on Tuesday. ESPN announced that the Champions Classic will tip off the season on Tuesday, Nov. 6 in Indianapolis with Duke playing Kentucky and Michigan State taking on Kansas. Ohio State has already committed to opening at Cincinnati in its refurbished arena, likely on Nov. 7, the day after the Champions Classic. Other schools will likely look for splashy debuts.

“The start of the season had become so compressed with the holidays and exams that the additional three days allows schools to better schedule the start of the season and it’s the benefit for the student athletes and coaches,’’ Gavitt said.

I wonder if Morty was referring to some sort of open practice or scrimmage?

Seriously. Even with that he still mailed this one in. I'm pretty sure CC is on record saying Duke is not going to happen. Holy Cross is not going to happen. Kentucky and Notre Dame are lazy choices. Gonzaga is an intriguing choice. So TG had one thoughtful idea out of five.

I think they should open it with a big concert -- name talent -- just for students and faculty....no speeches because 99% of speeches suck....sorry Pat Ryan and Jim Phillips.....bring the players up onto the stage at some point. Invite all the Rivals or ESPN top 50 2020 and 2021 recruits to attend. A big dance party. Have Pat Baldwin Jr. cut the ribbon to the front door.

All this "right team to open with" is mental masturbation.

Can the players speak?

ND would work

How 'bout ND, just like in Dec '83? But I Guarantee the game would be a better watch than the yawner that happened that night.

IIRC, the game was 10-10 at half and 30-30 at the end of regulation. I believe there was an offensive explosion by the 'cats to win in OT something like, 40-36.

Am I remembering this game correct? I was in section 211 or 212 that night.

You are remembering the game correctly. It was not the inaugural game at WRA though. That was a double header on 11/28 with the men playing Bradley, and the women playing USC.

I just want to win the first game in the new arena. I never want to hear the phrase, "NU is winless so far in their new arena."

Anyone but ND!

If Loyola can't make it how about throwing a Saluki a bone and bringing in SIU? They were second in the Valley last year and return 8 seniors (one of few teams with more than NU) and should be a contender next year. Plus, our State schools need all the financial help they can get.
