Anywhere but the Rant Board
The usual cast of characters are in mid season form. Let's see, our QB is not elusive enough. Our kicker doesn't kick it into the end zone. Our WR's are never open. Our opponents suck. We can't score a TD every time against a FCS team. Our OL blows. The backup QB's need to run the "regular" offense. We suck when we are ranked. The coaches aren't creative. Let's hope we are not favored against Duke. The QB throws into coverage. The freshman are uninterested. The opponents make terrible calls.

For a bunch of alleged smart people, there is no shortage of space on the clown car. You want some credibility? Then be balanced with your comments instead just expected us non-alums to take it at face value that you are smart due to your sheepskin.

why would a non-alum ever visit an NU board?

re: the incessant negativity, this board is epic in that regard. i can only imagine the contortions some posters would have gone through to not enjoy the '95 and '96 seasons.

This was the favored one for 95...

Non-alum here as well, PPD. I'll just toss in my two cents. First of all, these are some incredibly smart people - sheepskin or not. I think what you're seeing is the natural pessimism that most fans - unless you're a fan of the Harlem Globetrotters - tend to have, as the "expect the worst and hope for the best" mindset opens you up to a lot less heartbreak than if you hadn't realistically allowed for the possibility of things going south. And in our particular situation, you have to remember what many of us long-timers have been through . . . what we've borne witness to has been HISTORICALLY bad; bad beyond belief.
It's probably similar, sportingwise, to someone who's lived through the Depression - even after that was long over and times were better, many of those folks remained, shall we say, extremely guarded with their money; it had been ingrained in them by their experiences. Even fast-forwarding to the modern version of the program, in the last few years we've managed to end Duke's epic losing streak, lose to New Hampshire AND succumb to the greatest comeback in NCAA history (and ALL of those were at home, on top of it o_O). Our good friend Wrassler could probably expound on this, but the pessimism you're seeing is, I imagine, a sort of defense mechanism against the inevitable pain that comes with being a fan. And, since so much has gone so wrong, so many times with our program that -- E-Cat's admirable optimism aside -- it's kind of natural to expect something to blow up, just when it looks like it won't. We may not be a huge fan base, but the ones who are here have certainly paid a lot of dues, and deserve to see good things happen with our program. Given our history, though, it just gets a little dicey to start EXPECTING things to go our way. THAT'S the mindset that both Fitz and Chris Collins are trying to change, and I personally believe both will be successful at doing just that. Some of our posters are more optimistic than they're letting on; I don't think expectations have ever been higher.

Although not an alum, I have been a fan since long before the rose bowl year, so I understand the sentiment. I would say that I have guarded optimism. We have some area's of concern and have a half dozen games that I think the betting line will be less than a touchdown if they went off today. The season could go either way still. Before the season started most everyone except Turk and Wrassler had us between 7-5 & 5-7. I would say after game 1 those expectations were raised and some within the program will get skewered if we are not in a decent bowl game. I could be wrong, but I doubt it based on the attitude of some posters who seem to consistently tear down the team. Maybe it is the defensive mechanism you mention or maybe they just want to say I told you so.

We just won 41-0 and the angst to me was very predictable. I totally understand the frustration caused by the last two seasons, it was real for all of us. However, can we at least enjoy it while we are doing many of the things so far this year that we all bitched we weren't doing the last 2 years? The negativity when we win is tiresome. It's a long season and I believe everyone will get their opportunity to vent when we play the inevitable clunker(s).

Very astute. You forgot Miami of Ohio though. I agree with most of this (except for the part about that unnamed nincompoop being our good friend), and I am occasionally guilty of same. Just as we get our hopes up, they are dashed against the rocks on the shore. Personally, I have withheld my griping for the moment. This "feels" different, mostly because we have an actual defense that has a "wow" factor

My mom is a child of the depression and she still saves all kinds of crap that she ends up hoarding or, um, "recycling". My dad was nearly as bad

Remember, many of the people hear are also CUBS fans. I am not, but I am a Cleveland Indians fan, which is basically the same, although we just usually suck, without doing it in hilarious fashion.

LOL about the Indians. I grew up an Indians/Browns/Cavs fan, and went to NU during the dark ages, so am quite used to disappointment!

Worse than a critic? A critic of critics...

and, for what it's worth, our most negative poster this weekend is also one of our biggest Pollyannas. (I think the thread was titled 'awful'.)

Very excited for Saturday here...

Yep, but that "Pollyanna" at least presents some balance to his viewpoints. Nobody claimed there isn't cause for concern in certain areas. Pretty sure there always will be. My biggest beef is with the handful of posters that pretty much rip on everything. There timing is impeccable. Hence the title of this thread. Then everyone else is a Pollyanna because they disagree.

I had us at 8-4 before the season. I believe that we're a perennial 7 to 8 win program at this point assuming average health. I'd rather say 8 than 7, so I had us at 8-4.

We'll have a 9-10 win season if we have better health than average health. With some luck, maybe we have a shot at something special. If we have worse than average health, we're looking at 5-6 wins.

I think it could be a good season assuming average health, but that's a big assumption given the last two years. At a time we have more quality depth than I've seen at NU in a long time, naturally we're getting dinged in the area we don't have as much depth (o-line). Even though I think Thorson has a big upside, I'm also worried that the lack of experience at QB will bite us in the butt at some point, possibly this week against Duke. Cutcliffe is a clever coach, and I'm sure he'll throw in a lot of defensive wrinkles. I hope we're able to run the ball effectively as we did against Stanford. I do see the improved recruiting of recent years starting to take effect, and I'm optimistic about the future. I'm hoping for a good season this year, but I think the next couple of years could be even better.

All I'm saying is that, when one of the most consistently positive posters brings up a thread of negatives after a 41-0, maybe there's some credibility to the idea that things aren't perfect. I am actually super happy with the first two games ("it's good to be king").

Personally, this team is way ahead of where I expected, and I expect some 17-13 wins this year based on two weeks' of games where I would have projected 24-17 losses to start the year. I didn't expect a bowl coming into the year; I do today (though I think this week is a loss more likely than not).

Don't know why everyone loves Duke so much. They play in the ACC Coastal which is probably the worst division in the Power 5. They missed Clemson and FSU for the past 2 years (except for FSU in the title game when they got murdered). Before 2013, they finished 5th or 6th in the coastal division for 5 years. Yes, Cutcliffe is doing a nice job, but I was far more worried about Stanford at home than Duke on the road. Could we lose? Of course, we could win or lose every remaining game on the schedule. Is a loss "more likely than not?" I don't know, Duke is favored, so I guess maybe it's more likely than not the favored team wins the game. But let's just enjoy the run.

As for GoCatsGo's opinion of the Oline and the team in general... We weren't playing a few olineman. I don't know what North, Mertz or Olson's issues are, but I think (hope) they'll be back this week. Not sure about DePietro, but I'm hopeful it's just a sprain and we'll see him soon. Park was in and out as well. So basically what GCG has said was that our 2nd and 3rd string Oline didn't dominate as much as we would've liked to have seen. We still ran for 344 yards running nothing but inside zone, outside zone, and a few sweeps with Roberts. Is our oline great? No. I hope they continue to improve. So the team isn't perfect. Far from it. They are very good though. Maybe they'll improve and become great. Maybe they'll get a bad attitude, stop working hard, get injured and suck. We'll have to watch it play out, but I vote for becoming great.

O Line remains a concern of many as it has under performed the last couple years and we now have 5 starters less than healthy and we are concerned about another year like the last two. And the O will only be as good as the OL.

Our RB ran well without much of an OL last year. This year, we actually have a shut down D. We may only need to score a couple TDs a game to win. Maybe one of them by the D itself.

I don't *love* Duke so much, but they have a good offense and a good coach and a fairly solid record of success under their current leadership and they're playing at home against an offense who has a first year starter at the helm.

I think it'll be a close game. "More likely than not" simply means I think, at this point, that there's a 51 percent chance or better of Duke winning. Sorry for being so negative.

I don't mind the negative posters as long as they admit when they're wrong. Brings to mind what Lou Holtz once told his players (paraphrase), "You are welcome to take your helmet off after a good play, as long as you take it off after a bad play, too." I want to see those helmets come off after we beat Duke.

Don't forget that Duke has a first year starter and hasn't faced a quality opponent yet. Also, the 'Cats often seem more focused on the road than at home...at least in recent years. I agree it's a toss-up, but there's reason for optimism.

How about a defensive performance like the one at Penn State last year?

Based on the highlights from the Duke game, we're definitely going to have to guard against the deep ball. Seems like the Dukies get downfield fast. A strong pass rush will be important as well as close attention to their quarterback who runs a nice read-option.

Um, because we are Northwestern fans? I've been bleeding purple since I could walk. Uncle played for the Cats and have been a lifelong fan.

Is there a rule against liking Northwestern I missed?

I'm happy to have you Bret, NURosebowl... and yes even Turk. (apologies to the many others I missed) You're all way more passionate than 95% of people that I know from college.
