Hopeless

I can't see how things will get better. We're going to be bad at football for a long, long time.
Other teams have shown that major coaching/coordinator changes can have almost immediate positive effects. Our talent is roughly equivalent to what we’ve had over the past decade. There is no way that we have recruited progressively worse and worse players who don’t even know where to run on the football field.

Namely, Duke, Kansas and TCU

"Hopeless" is a word I hate to use but crossed my mind all afternoon. I will admit I am embarrassed 1) but how much NU football can influence my mood, and 2) how much concentrated effort it takes for me to actually mentally rise above it.

I now understand how and why Illinois fans emotionally wall themselves off from the football program for extended periods...it's basically a survival mechanism.

It was actually a pleasure hearing the crowd boo Fitz and the team going into the half (after they missed the FG that fans make during commercial break contests). Nothing can change until the heat is so hot Fitz has no choice.

If they want to be a big boy program, they have to do big boy s**t! If assistants and coordinators aren’t doing their jobs at an acceptable level, they need to be replaced with ones who can!

My concern for the long term, is that if they continue this trend going into conference expansion, which I would assume is when the divisions will be eliminated, it is going to be hard for this program to right the ship.

How many millions have been, and are being invested in this program for facilities? They need to do better than this!

How many millions? Well, Pat Ryan and @Alan Smithee , combined, have given over 400 million.

If the heat isn't on now, when will it be?

in all honesty, the answer to this is not until the national sports media starts talking about it (which I imagine has to be soon) and puts him at the top of the "hot seat" list.

FItz has been rather generously spared from all that I've seen so far - the beheadings of Frost and Chryst probably bought him some time and fed the bloodthirsty journalists, along with the 15+ years he's had building relationships as a coaching golden boy, with stellar graduation rates and "doing more with less."

But once the media takes aim, then laser beams start shooting through Gragg and the new president, who probably hasn't even adjusted the chair at his desk yet. It's only Fitz's fault until it's his bosses'.

That means the Head Coach is not doing his job at an acceptable level. Believe it or not, HCs can actually influence the game plans of assistants! They can even overrule them! Shocking, I know.
