How come Notre Dame doesn't have to worry about recruiting academically proficient players?

I'm being serious when I say I'm really impressed that Kelly made these statements. He wasn't under any particular pressure to do so. I think ND should be lauded for acknowledging this issue publicly.

I agree. I am very impressed with Kelly to publically state what is the obvious. Very few D1 kids have the academic credentials to deal with a highly competitive academic environment.

Kelly made the statement to put more pressure on the University to continue to lower standards. There is nothing admirable about what Kelly said. This was all calculated to help his recruiting & a built in excuse as to why his team does not compete for national championships. This is something the alumni can point to as the 7-8 win seasons pile up.

This article is total bullshit. Yet another in a long line of half truths and out right lies ND engages in to obscure the truth about their football admission/academic progress standards. Use to be anybody with reasonably good character and plenty of football ability would be admitted. Tony Rice comes to mind. It didn't matter what the transcript looked like. But lately ND has also looked the other way when it comes to the "fit" or character factor. Too many recruits who have zero affinity for the school, have been drawn to it instead because they viewed it as the most attractive "big stage" for showcasing their skills. The recent problems have everything to do with character and little or nothing to do with academic demands. ND has always made it very easy for the football players to remain eligible and receive a degree. Attend class and turn in assignments has long guaranteed academic eligibility and a degree. But many of these latest problems involved kids who just didn't want to do the minimum. They belonged in the SEC from the beginning.

I completely agree with this assessment. He was not complaining about the quality of the recruits (after all, all he needs to do is raise his own academic minimums if that were his complaint), but rather asking for more "resources", which I presume is code for "tutors to do their homework for them".
