I think they target guys where NU is their only option at the P5 level. This has probably already been discussed here, but I couldn’t find a thread. Sorry.

Barnett wasn’t an interim coach, and the scope of college football has changed SIGNIFICANTLY since the early 90s.How did Gary Barnett recruit coming off the records of Francis Peay?
Lousy old outdated stadium. Super hard articial turf. Weight room insanely outdated. Academics. Empty stands. And doggone it he took the Purple to Pasedena!
You need someone who can sell ice cream to Eskimo's (but I work in sales and I have seen it done - many times).
Going back a ways (to our last "interim HC"), Francis Peay blamed the 0-11 1989 season on the recruiting "shadow" cast by his interim status during the 1986 season. This has probably already been discussed here, but I couldn’t find a thread. Sorry.

Sign some reaches and hope the new guy can work the transfer portal and navigate admissions. While trying to keep the existing players. Good luck. No one good will be available until December when recruiting is nearly done.Barnett wasn’t an interim coach, and the scope of college football has changed SIGNIFICANTLY since the early 90s.
I think @Medill '03 might have it right. You get the bottom of the barrel. Players don’t commit to schools anymore. They commit to a coach and NIL. With an interim, we have nobody driving either bus. The AD is blowing this badly. Looks like this entire class will be a wash unless the new hire pulls some better guys in spring/summer.
True. But NU admissions makes that plan more complicated. The lone bright spot is that you can transform a program more quickly (see: Prime/Colorado, though we will see how well that works out) through over-reliance on the transfer portal.
So quickly some quit on the famed “40 year plan” which Northwestern supposedly offers to all alumni. You “commit to the school”…not the coach/staff. Certainly not ideal.
So are you Turk, or someone else? This has probably already been discussed here, but I couldn’t find a thread. Sorry.
???? I found my way here after the incredible basketball run last spring. So are you Turk, or someone else?
If the former, welcome back! If not, you won’t last long.

Newcomers aren’t particularly welcome around here? Full disclosure, Jim Starr isn’t the name on my birth certificate.
For most schools that’s true, for NU we know that isn’t the case. I doubt the new coach will be given more leeway with admissions than FItz ever got and we all know how difficult it was for Fitz to get talent through the transfer portal other than 1 year grad transfers, which we know have a slightly easier time with admissions. The lone bright spot is that you can transform a program more quickly (see: Prime/Colorado, though we will see how well that works out) through over-reliance on the transfer portal.

Even if NU hits a grand slam with the next hire, something I am highly skeptical of, the decimation of the 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes will have a huge negative impact on NU for at least the next 3-4 seasons.
Correction: I don’t know all things, but I do know the truth.Welcome to our humble (especially these days) little purple internet living room, JimStarr. Stick around - CatManTrue knows ALLLLLLLL things (even more so than AdamOnFirst) and more importantly, is the sole source of Truth you will ever need. The rest of us peddle a lesser version, but we occasionally have fun doing it. So stick around and join us.
. . . and infinitely so.True. But NU admissions makes that plan more complicated.
At this point, how do you get a guy to commit to either? You “commit to the school”…not the coach/staff. Certainly not ideal.
Already got it BIGAnd to the “Big Ten”. When are we do for a name change?
Actually so much of this is the President. Gragg as AD is bad but so much of this is he is being told what to do by someone that if possible is even less competent than he is,.Barnett wasn’t an interim coach, and the scope of college football has changed SIGNIFICANTLY since the early 90s.

Friend, I am 100% confident you are incorrect. Was this troll a needlessly negative troll or a positive troll? I thought this past bball season was absolutely incredible, but the failure to name a full time coach will probably be a killer for the fb team. Recruiting/NIL is the driving force in D1 sports…do we have anyone coordinating NIL during the absence of a coach?Correction: I don’t know all things, but I do know the truth.
That’s why Lou personally changed my username.
FWIW I’m 98% confident this is a new variant of DocCatFan2 or whatever that longterm troll was called.
On the plus side, it gives a ton of open slots for the new coach to recruit his own guys and hit the transfer portalBarnett wasn’t an interim coach, and the scope of college football has changed SIGNIFICANTLY since the early 90s.

Who's on first. Maybe on second?Where’s adamonfirst??
AKA the Coach Prime MO.On the plus side, it gives a ton of open slots for the new coach to recruit his own guys and hit the transfer portal

But is @CoralSpringsCat on board? Will admissions let us turn over half the roster?
Schill has not seemed to understand the ramifications of any of his actions yet. What makes you think he has a handle on this.? Gragg hasn't really showed us he is aware of anything at this pointNo doubt, we’re at an incredible disadvantage with an interim head coach. It would be in the best interest of the program to name the next head coach as soon as possible. I don’t think we can afford to wait until the end of the season to name the next HC. I’m sure Schill, Gragg and company understand this and will take all the necessary steps to get it done. 🙄
Are you hazing this guy?So are you Turk, or someone else?
If the former, welcome back! If not, you won’t last long.
I’m hoping it’s Turk. We need some of his zaniness to spice up the boards, which have been a bit depressing. Are you hazing this guy?
