I read a post on the main board a couple of months ago as to whether Hunter the Punter has ever tried other positions, and wanted to respond with the facts — and just the facts, ma’am. I’ve been too distracted to answer but, while waiting for my dinner tonight, decided to respond here on the Rock.
I haven’t met Hunter, but one of my buddies is an Ohio coach that’s close to him and his family. He said that Woodridge’s coaches tried to develop him as a defensive end in high school due to his size, but he lacked the necessary athleticism and “nasty” instinct. He never ever wanted to hurt anyone - making Punter his most natural position. Think Strief x100 regarding the desire not to hurt people (re: FloridAlum’s post on Zach on the main board).
From what my buddy has told me, Hunter’s pacifism is a natural offshoot from his faith. He is devoutly religious and avoids violence at all costs. I’d guess he aimed his collegiate punts out of bounds as a result, but haven’t checked the stats to confirm.
He and his family hemorrhage Purple, and always have since he committed to NU. I don’t think he has a shot at the pros, but he will always be an ambassador for our program.
I hope he boots another 80 yard punt against Kentucky, and pins them deep everytime he can. He has been a big part of our defense’s success the last few seasons, and I’d bet that he has one more great game left.
