Looks like Hunter will stick with the Cowboys. Averaged 47 yards/kick last season, pretty dang good!

The Cowboys won’t have punter Chris Jones on the roster at the start of the new league year.

The team announced Jones’ release just before 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The move clears $2 million in cap space and leaves $500,000 in dead money for Dallas.

Jones joined the team in 2011 and was their sole punter from 2013 through 2019. His run came to an end when he needed to have abdominal surgery last year.

He averaged 44.5 yards per kick during his run with the Cowboys.

Hunter Niswander is now the only punter on the teams’s roster. He took over when Jones was injured last year and averaged 47.2 yards per kick.

May his longevity endure to that of John Kidd, another great NU punter. Just 14 more years to go.

By the way, yes, stats are for losers but Kidd's non-punting stats from '93 confound me:

3 rushes
-13 yards total
longest rush of 2 yards

These are probably botched snaps, maybe with a fake punt play thrown in. Yet he scored a touchdown somehow in one of the 3 aforementioned non-punting touches he had all season. Can someone explain?

I looked at his game log for 1993 on pro footballreference.com. His TD came on a 2 yd run (vs the Bears), so it was not a fake punt. It could have been a fake FG with him holding (around the 9) and somehow scoring, though scoring like that under those conditions is really, really unusual (a running play on a fake FG on a really short field?). Then again, it was vs the Bears, and no one screws up football like the Bears.

Holy cow. You found it!

That’s some good scouting by the Chargers to call that. Kidd was a good enough athlete to win that race.

Nice technique by Bears CB Donnel Woolford on the previous play. He was a good corner.

Kudos to the announcers for focusing on Kidd's athletic ability instead of saying something like.... what a heads-up play by one of those smart Northwestern kids!

Of course, he never mentioned Northwestern once, which kind of sucked.

They say he was a "great quarterback for a long time... "
Huh?
He was a QB/P as an incoming recruit as I recall but he was so valuable as a punter that he never played QB. Probably wasn't a D1 level QB anyway.

Actually, the announcers do mention Northwestern, but in connection with another Wildcat. 130:45 on that video features Bob Christian's 40 yard catch on what should have been the game winning drive.

Woolford looked like a younger Greg Newsome out there!

Uh oh...Cowboys signed Brian Anger today.....makes me mad!

Just saw that Hunter is punter for the XFL Defenders.

They’re 4-6 and playing the 9-1 Renegades for the championship.

I haven’t watched an iota of the new XFL but am happy for him.

Yes Sir. The Chargers ran that play early in the game, so they probably spotted that giant right side opening on film and wondered, "Holy Shit! How did nobody else run the fake FG against the Bears?!? We'll take it!" That was a huge opening - and good ol' Wanny stands there with the clueless look... what a shock. :)
