I still cannot understand...

Four point swing. Slowed the momentum.

None of the them are sleeping tonight and they shouldn't.

Missing the call happens; the game is not officiated by robots. What was inexcusable was the technical. Refs are told; if they blow a call, absolutely do not compound the error be T'ing up the coach unless he goes Bobby Knight on you, ESPECIALLY if the game is close.

Think there's a good chance they didn't know they missed a call.

The Gonzaga player who committed the goal tend thought NU was pissed over a no foul call.

Wow If they didn't know they missed the call, that was even worse. Collins has a worse angle than the ref on the call (the foul-line ref) and saw it immediately, as did everyone on TV....

Um...don't you think they would have made the call if they knew they missed it? That's not one of those judgement calls that you just let slide. Collins' T happened less than ten seconds after the missed call. They had no idea they missed it until later.

The difference between officials who are officiating and the ones you saw tonight is that they are acutely aware of time and game situation, and, as such, simply do not T up coaches at critical junctures such as that whether they thought their call was 100% correct or not (and there was certainly several reasons for them to doubt their call in the case in question).

I have seen coaches go absolutely ballistic in similar situations and they simply do not get T'd up by the best crews in the game. I don't think that these guy were simply in that league tonight, which was evidenced throughout the game (though I have seen Jeff Clark ref and he is usually better than this; simply had an off night I guess). Heck,I am not a Ted Valentine fan, but his crew officiated an absolute masterpiece in the Purdue-ISU game compared to this....

It was one of the most obvious technicals you'll ever see. The refs would be fired if they allowed his boorish behavior to go unpunished.

Cc blew it, plain and simple.

"Critical junctures" are irrelevant. A T is a T is a T.

This was a T under any circumstances.

You have to separate your ego from what is obvious. Your homerism embarrassing.

He whiffed because he was mentally soft at the wrong time.

You have no idea what you are talking about. No way that the ref would have been fired if he just ran up the court; that is simply not the way it works for referees at the level of the NCAA tournament. In fact, he is likely to get in a lot more hot water because of the technical, since the NCAA absolutely hates refs influencing the outcomes of game in such direct ways, which is why they issued one of the fastest statement in NCAA officiating history this evening.

Now, I know you've never officiated a game. Even on the high school level, I was TAUGHT by experienced college officials how to avoid giving T's in those situations. Critical junctures are absolutely relevant; otherwise, your would not see 90% of technicals call in non-critical junctures, with the lion's share of the remaining 10% called because the coach went Bobby Knight on someone. When you have a T called at a critical juncture in this manner, it is news, as it was this evening

Right, they admitted they blew the call. They also (obviously) stand by giving the T 100%.

Why?

Because it's one of the most obvious T's you'll ever see.

If you viewed the statement of the NCAA as support of the official's conduct in this instance, you simply did not read it correctly.

Rookie mistake? Maybe. He still accomplished a hell of a lot more than any other coach at NU. I'll take him over any of them, every day of the week.

He is already a great coach. Not perfect, but great. He will improve, and man, how great things will be for Northwestern then. Especially since people like you won't have anything to bitch about without looking completely asinine. Oh, wait...

How three referees miss that call? Three! How can that happen? How? Inexcusable.

I still cannot understand how the guy can grab the rim and they miss that. It is physically impossible for a defender with his hand actually outside the basket blocking a shot to grab the rim. Hands just don't work that way!

Pardon had two hands on the ball. Who the hell did they think DID grab the rim?

I was sitting courtside and also missed it. I'm actually less upset about that call (refs can miss one call) than I am with the 10 other poor calls against us throughout the game, including another missed goaltend early. I was near Doug Collins and he was rightfully on them the whole game for their abysmal performance.

You were there? I am jealous

Yeah, great weekend, though I woke up still mad at the refs. What a great season, though.

I dont believe they missed it. I base that on all the other calls and no calls which favored gonzo. It was blatant enough to suggest that alot of vegas money was on the cats to pull off the 8-1 upset line.

Vegas must have racked up. Just saying that it isnt unreasonable to conclude that the refs actually saw the goaltending but chose not to call it. The video evidence also shows clearly that the ref on the baseline was looking right at the cylinder when it happened.

Of course they saw it. Stop making excuses for the refs.

Normally I'd agree, but Collins charged clear onto the court and didn't leave the guy much choice. He's human, but he's gotta have a little more control in that situation. That said, he stuck up for his team and I'm fine with that.

Why does everyone keep responding to this imbecile? Don't you all know that's exactly what he wants? He and DocCatsFan are sitting together right now in their underwear laughing hysterically how they keep getting a rise out of everyone. Just ignore and he will go away.

I'm going to make the argument that when an opposing player sticks his arm through the cylinder and then on the way down grabs the rim and the refs jog up court like nothing happened, as a coach making a million-plus bucks a year.....ya better run onto the court and raise holy hell so the world will see what friggin' happened and all the major media will know to write about it for a couple days.

And Collins probably figured the refs would not be able to see him on the court since they were unable to see Collin's arm through the cylinder.

You must not watch college, pro, or high school BB or you are just like making a total ass of yourself. The T was given by a terrible ref because he knew he blew the call. Also a T wouldn't have happened if they called they play correctly. Now go and play with your crayons and kiss BC's ass again.

Didn't know going 3 feet onto the court, and being immediately pulled back by an assistant, was charging clear onto then court. I've seen coaches such as Fran McCaffery charge clear onto the court, and it looked a lot different.

Watch the replay and how the ref, instead of spring up the court where the action (and his responsibility) was, makes things look a lot worse than they were by jogging to Collins and issuing the T. If he sprints up the court like he is taught to do in volatile situations like that, then Collins behavior is barely noticed and I am not writing this now. Collins exhibited similar behavior earlier in the game; if you don't T that up early, Officiating 101 is not to T it up late.

By the rules, Fran McCaffery probably shouldn't have finished a game in his career. Dude does 3 or 4 T-worthy things per game.

One of the biggest mistakes made in terms of maintaining control of the game by refs was not T-ing Collins up after the missed goaltend on Lindsey's shot. He was absolutely begging for it, I think on purpose in order to get people fired up, but two separate refs didn't do it as he ran back and for between them screaming "That was so "f*cking easy!"

Oh well.

Collins happened to be right abou that call, too. It should have been an easy goaltend call.
