ICYMI on The Rock: NU beats out the big boys for Commit No. 5

Great decision Earnest! We can't wait to see you wreck havoc in Evanston.

Great get from Texas...again. His tape reminds me of Lowry as a freshman, lots of speed and aggressiveness. But he looks faster, and is playing inside. Weighs in at 235?? but will be able to add over the years. Can't wait to official letter to come in next year!

Congrats NU on getting a really good football player. We thought we had him at UT but looks like you guys may be a better fit for what he needs. We are 0-2 head to head for North Texas talent. We have our hands full with our in-state rivals, now we have to keep an eye on you guys too!

Super impressed with his tape. Seems like the staff is doing a great job bringing in D and O linemen.

His tape is freaking phenomenal. That get off...

He's also a great frame, looks good to hold 300 no problem.

Actually ... I thought Kent's tape was much more like Lowry, and I believe it is Kent that is projected to play a role similar to, if not the same as, Lowry. Brown, on the other hand, strikes me as a pure edge pass rusher with the size to play every down. In that regard, I don't recall a past NU prospect in the same mold as Brown. Of course, who knows how this will all end up. All we know for sure is that the Brown and Kent commitments have given this class a jumbo sized boost at a much needed time. Many of the better prospects will be committing between now and the summer. And the news of these commits will resonate with other top prospects on the NU recruiting Board.

Wow. A 2-fer.

Both players are exactly what fits the cat's scheme. Big bodies with athletic ability and the frame to push 285 and add versatility inside.

I'm thrilled with today.

So is this going to be like having Lowry and Wootton on the field at the same time? I'm drooling.

If they both progress well, that wouldn't be too far off.

Wouldn't sleep on Carnifax, Gaziano, or Goens at DE either, by the way.

No,in fact the ideal situation is that those guys are good enough to give these recruits a redshirt year so they can really grow into their positions.

How can you tell Brown is a pure edge rusher from that film? I saw a good, tall, lanky athlete but with little indication he has elite speed off the edge because he was always playing inside. He is very good at slipping blocks, that's for sure, but how will he respond to Big Ten OT's hammering on him? Not saying the edge speed isn't there; it's probably evident in game film. I'll have to watch the film again to see what I may have missed. Kent's speed is evident in his film.

I hadn't seen Miller's film until now. Very impressed with his play as a DT. Should be rated higher, IMO. Perhaps his current size is knocking him back with the recruiting rags. He may be able to help us out as a freshman after 17 more months of lifting. Here's hoping he gets to 280 lbs by August 2017. Very doable.

After watching both Miller and Brown again...wow, do I like Miller! Quick, physical, good football awareness (several plays remind me of Mims nice read and goalline stop against Illinois in 2008). He could also play DE for us based upon his quicks and speed. I love him at DT, though.

Brown is excellent as well. Very slippery and a good athlete. Needs to gain strength and tighten his core a bit to better control his balance. I see him as a little bit behind Miller in being college ready at this time. I'd love to see him get to 280 and help with our inside rush. He's teflon-coated. I just can't evaluate Brown as a DE from this film, but I may be missing something.

This is a remarkable threesome of DL talent, the best I can recall in quite a while.

Brown is playing inside, but his burst is pretty obvious. His biggest thing right now is size/strength. I actually thought his body control was pretty good for a kid his size. His burst and length should translate easily to the edge, where his lack of strength will also be at least partially mitigated by working one half of his man rather than both.

While I think Miller and Brown have some pretty darn good tape (as well as Taylor), I keep going back to Jordan Thompson (and even Trent Goens) as my favorite DL tape. We have some serious young talent in our DL group. Should be fun to watch them develop.

Texas' Big Ten team!

Glades, the first few plays on Brown's tape show his remarkable burst when he blows by those guys inside. He looks like he is launched from a slingshot. Imagine that on the edge, with the core strength added to turn the corner without overrunning the play. IO was only about 215 as a senior, and never really developed the change of direction skills to complete his edge game. Brown looks like a different player.

The first time I watched Millers tape it felt like I was watching recruiter porn. He was so cat-like for such a big kid who was only a junior. If he weighs 280, he's four stars. What is even better is the improvement his brother showed on his senior tape--noticeably more athletic. Both kids will move well even at 290-300 lbs.
