Just talked to three-star 2019 DE Adam Berghorst, the 6-foot-7 kid from Zeeland (Mich.) East. A few interesting things:
- He visited NU for three games three years ago when his brother Jonathan was getting recruited by NU. (His brother really wanted to go to NU but NU never offered; he's at Central Michigan now.) Adam was smitten with NU right away and said that he liked the facilities then, so he can't wait to see the Taj Fitz. He's planning to come in for a spring practice in the next few weeks.
- He wants to play baseball and football in college. He's a shortstop. (Just kidding. He's a pitcher, of course, that's been clocked at 89 mph.) Michigan and Michigan State has offered him in both sports and he's currently talking to Notre Dame's baseball staff. He hasn't broached the subject with NU yet but plans to talk about it when he visits. Both UM and MSU offered him partial scholarships for baseball (full rides are very rare), but that's only if he wants to just play baseball. If he wants to play both, he will be a football counter (that's an NCAA rule). He loves both sports and plans on playing both.
- He wants to go somewhere close to home - like within a 2-3 hour drive. (NU is 2.5 hours.) He's going to take another visit to UM, MSU, ND and NU and then make a decision, hopefully by the end of the school year, if not over the summer for sure.
- NU and most schools are recruiting him as a DE, with the possibility of moving to OT if he grows into it.
