I talked to three-star Texas OL Connor Robertson tonight about his weekend official visit to Northwestern.
Connor, who is a really impressive kid and great to interview, raved about the visit. I will post the story in the morning, but this was his answer when I asked what stood out the most: "Seeing the whole thing was really the best part. I saw it on video and on Zoom calls, but I had never seen the actual school before. So it was great to see everything in person, meet the coaches and everything... (Going to) the Cubs game, bowling at Pinstripes, making it to (head) coach (Pat) Fitz(gerald)'s house, it was all great...It's definitely a great school." He said it exceeded his expectations.
He said that all of the OL were hosted by Peter Skoronski and Charlie Schmidt. Malik Washington and Ray Niro were the guys hosting the skill-position guys, Austin Brown and Conner Harrell. (Remember, there weren't many players on campus, so there weren't a lot of options.)
Robertson genuinely enjoyed himself and was impressed by everything he saw, but I doubt Northwestern is going to land him. He is 100% intent on taking his two remaining officials. He's going to Texas this weekend, and then Stanford on the last weekend of the month -- when he will be on campus with Fisher Anderson, who took an OV to NU last weekend. Anyway, I doubt that NU will still have a spot for Robertson by then, and he is fully aware of that. And the fact that he is an interior OL, as are commits Deuce McGuire and Nick Herzog, makes it even less likely, in my eyes. Texas and Stanford, by the way, don't have any OL committed and have all of their spots remaining.
I may write a story about what it was like for the O-linemen on the visit, once I talk to one or two more. I've talked to Deuce and Robertson so far. Coach Anderson addressed it directly to all of them as "the elephant in the room," so everyone was well aware of the situation. Robertson said that the five OL got a long great, despite the fact that they were all competing for one spot. He said that it didn't come up all that often and that they "tried to stay away for it." Still, Robertson said "if anything, it kind of made us closer. We all got along really well. It shows the type of people that NU is looking for. We're all pretty similar... Whatever happens, happens. I hope it all works out well for everyone, if not at Northwestern, then I hope all of the guys succeed."
